I started to read the wiki explanation, and my brain tripped over itself, but I'll still join if I may. I'll look forward to figuring it out as I go. It's actually really easy once you get into it. Basically, we are each assigned into different groups. No one knows who is in which group, except the Mafia, who knows who is in the Mafia (obviously). Every night the Mafia tries to kill someone. Every day we all come together and lynch. The doctor can try to keep the Mafia from killing someone. They need to guess right to do it though. The serial killer will try to kill someone every three days. If the serial killer is killed before the three days are up, that person cannot kill anyone. And we continue until either the Mafia is dead or the majority of townspeople are dead (which is what happened in the August mafia). And that's it. Sounds gruesome. I'm down for this. I've been wanting to kill lately (though I'm almost certain to be killed instead.)

Slight quibble - the only roles inherent to the game are "townsperson" and "mafia." Different versions of the game include special roles like doctor, investigator, serial killer, and many others, but all of them are optional. It can also be played with or without clues from the GM, with or without permission for alliance-forming by PM, and with or without a role-playing aspect. All those things will be set in individual games, but it's fun pretty much any way you play it.

All those things will be set in individual games, but it's fun pretty much any way you play it. Additional slight quibble - there is no need to stop when the majority of the townspeople are dead. As mafia was originally intended as a card game, the custom was that aces denoted mafia members. In any given group, there were usually four mafia members, though smaller groups might use only three. Traditional rules hold that the game only ends when there are enough mafia members to outvote the townspeople or all mafia members are dead. As such, in a traditional game of about fifteen people, four will be mafia and eleven are not. Should the doctor fail at their job each night and a townsperson be lynched each day, the game would end after four rounds, leaving three townspeople assumed dead after a vote lynched one of the four remaining townspeople.

Thats one of my personal favorite aspects.

My favorite is anytime a civilian knows they are going down, correctly pegs a member of the mafia anyways, and tells the town that person should be the next target yet is ignored. Anytime a civilian dies knowing the identity of a mafia member (especially if the civilian is lynched) I find it hilarious.

Not to speak for NA, but I know that he fully intends to start this any day now - he's just been swamped at work and stressed out by both his mother's and my health issues, so he's running a bit behind on getting it set up.
