Tonight was really fun (and not just because I kept winning, hehe).
I do, however, keep wishing there were a way to kick certain cards out of the online game - specifically, "date rape," "passable transvestites," and "the Virginia Tech Massacre." And I got to thinking about why those cards bother me so much. The third one is easy - it's a plain and simple "too soon." But that one I don't mind when other people play or anything - I just won't pick it, because it never makes me laugh. The other two are a little bit more complicated, and I was asking myself why I disliked them so much but don't object to "Auschwitz" nearly as much. And I realized that the answer is actually pretty simple. There is no remotely likely scenario in which I play CAH with people who honestly believe that the Holocaust is okay. There is no widespread support for the Holocaust. People who DO support it are considered horrifying fringe lunatics. But "date rape" and "passable transvestites" both pose the real risk that someone playing the game is honestly thinking, "lol yeah, when I fucked that passed-out chick last week, that WAS hilarious!" or "lol yeah, trans* are weirdos." And that thought, even when I'm playing with a crowd that I trust not to feel that way, just sucks all the humor out of it for me.
If anyone can figure out a way to toss shitty cards, let me know, because our games are awesome and fun, but not having to stare at "passable transvestites" for twenty rounds because I really don't want to throw it would make them even more fun.
