So all of a sudden random words all over my screen are green and underlined and when you hover over them it shows you an ad. I also noticed that this is happen to random words in people's posts, too. Its noticeably slowing down the site.
Is this something anyone else has noticed?

Ick, that's super obnoxious. Adblock should get rid of it, I think.

It doesn't. It just started for me a few days ago and is making navigating the site a chore. It seriously slows my shit down.

So, the issues I had with ads were the result of some spyware bullshit called ScorpionSaver. No idea how it got there, but I think I have purged the motherfucking unclean. Saintb, maybe check and see if you have the same issue? Anyway, false alarm. Or rather there was something wrong, but it was just on my end.

Yeah doesn't show up on my end. If anyone else has them, they should probably check for malicious software.

Yeah, I don't have that shit, it sounds like some unrelated spyware. Linux for the win.

I'm thinking of upgrading to Linux when my laptop goes bonkers (may my laptop live another five years).
Or should I build my own? I have a general idea on how to build my own computer…

If you're reasonably comfortable poking around inside of computers, my own experience is that the cheapest option tends to be buying one that just needs a couple of simple things upgraded and then adding those bits in.

Eight years ago I built my own system for $700, it could run the newest games up until last year.

If you want to build a PC (which isn't hard at all and considerably cheaper than buying a premade computer, as Dya pointed out), Part Picker is incredibly helpful. I wouldn't recommend any Linux distro but Ubuntu to an average computer user, and you need to have a relatively modern computer to get the most out of Ubuntu.

It's a project that I've been thinking of embarking as soon as I have the money to do it. I'm obviously not paying over $200 for a Windows OS, which is why I was interested in Linux. That and I'm thinking of teaching myself computer coding, just because I can (plus it's a good skill set to have). Thanks for the link.

I have a general idea on how to build my own computer… Well, you can always build your own and use linux, but you have to make sure that drivers exist for the parts you're using (as long as they're not bleeding-edge then that should be fine). There's also the possibility of getting a computer that's pre-made without any operating system installed on it and then installing whatever you want on it. I recommend having a functioning computer handy if you want to install a linux distro for the first time though (unless you're doing Ubuntu, which is pretty dead easy). Holy shit people pay for Windows? If you bought a computer on which Windows was pre-installed and didn't go about the hassle of dealing with getting a refund, you paid for Windows.

I've never bought a pre-built computer.
I even build my own laptops, because fuck paying four times the price of the parts for something I can build myself in less than an hour.
Edit: In fact, the only Linux distro I've ever had to use extensively I ended up buying a copy of for my home server because it's way easier to get hands on experienced with it that way.
