"... yes you're cleared to engage any turrets that open fire first, but only those turrets. However bear in mind that at the very least they have a maximum effective range of 180 meters so it's probably a good idea to figure out if any of those turrets are active and tracking in a hurry. Anything else?"
Ryo had been studying the map carefully, so he began to have an idea of what the best course of action was. Speed was his priority according to Faizan's briefing, so he managed to establish, in his estimation, the closest route to the objectives that he would follow if it were entirely up to him. He could, at least, make the suggestion to the Lance leader when the time came.
Having discarded the possibility of the missile facility being used as a defense weapon against them - it seemed like a long-range cruise missile - it seemed to him that it should be well-guarded. Faizan's answer to the question about the forces inside the airfield seemed to confirm that. Ryo, therefore, drew the conclusion that the airfield wasn't as empty as the briefing had shown, which gave him a good idea of the position from where to approach it. The problem was that this route ran close of one of the PPC turrets, so Ryo sought confirmation on whether to engage in the case it was online and tracking - which in his mind, it probably was. Some careful scouting, in this case, would be required if the team followed that route, but that was the Lance leader's decision, and a matter for later.
For the moment, however, Ryo had got his answers. He shook his head. - "Not on my behalf for the moment, thank you sir."
He thought it best to let the others ask their questions, if they had, to see if something else would come up to him.

Ryan Panzer listened to the briefing as he intently studied the map, his mind already working as he devised a plan of attack. Sweeping his gaze from one point to the next, he mentally calculated the distance and rough amount of time to get from each point. This was not a timed test but speed as well as tactical efficiency were both going to be graded. "There. That looks like a heavily wooded area, which means slow going but we'll have the most concealment." stroking his chin, he narrowed his eyes on the map, sharp gaze studying every detail. Grunting in satisfaction, He checked the time on his watch, '0630'. "Excellent" he said more to himself as he looked up to address his lance. "If anyone has any questions, ask now. Otherwise, gather 'round and we'll discuss our plan of attack" Huck n' Roost SaintB Oviraptor @samuraikoku

Ryo paid attention at Panzer's remark about heavy woods and concealment. It seemed somewhat slower than what he had thought, so he concluded it was time to present his suggestion. He'd follow orders if necessary, but he didn't believe there was any harm in suggesting what looked like a good alternative."Dragoon Panzer, sir." - Ryo stated. - "Not to question your judgment, but I have an idea I'd like to run by you."
He pointed at the map as he began explaining.
"Given that our priorities are speed and tactical efficiency, I would first suggest approaching the dropship through the creek around this area. This area here is light woods, so we may be able to balance concealment and swift movement, and get a little of both. From the dropship, we could take one of these paths here, still light woods, and approach the airfield from its center. We can use this concealment to scout this PPC tower that we'll run into, so we can figure out how we move from there. That tower seems to be our most important worry if we take this route after securing the dropship. If we can bypass it or ignore it, we can move in on the airfield and take whatever forces are there by surprise. From then on, reaching the missile facility and the hangar would be entirely dependent on us." Of course, he was also going to explain the potential risks."The bad news is that if this tower is active, we might have to engage it, which would stump our potential surprise attack. The alternative is a longer road, but we might steer clear of the tower's potential range. However, as we don't know the size of the enemy force, it's possible we might find them guarding its western side, and if this is so we might take some time if we have to engage them." The decision, of course, wasn't his, and Ryo knew this. He'd listen intently to any other plans as he could learn something valuable. Attn.: anonymousjerk - You're the Lance leader.

Ryan listened silently to Cadet Sanada, nodding every time he made a point. "Very good. He's quite astute." Ryan thought silently to himself as he listened to his plan. When the Cadet finished speaking, Ryan gestured to him and leaned over the map. Pointing to the start point. "This is where we're being dropped in, Correct? NAV point Alpha. I agree with you about crossing this stream right here" He traced his finger over the route Sanada indicated. "While this first part is good, I would like to point out a few things about this center approach." Ryan pointed out the route. "You see this area here, and this one here, Both heavy woods with his finger he indicated the pockets of wooded area flanking the center path. "That's the perfect place to spring an ambush from." Tracing his finger up the center route he kept going, "The route you suggested, while it is a good route, as it is the path of least resistance, puts us in this open area here. This. Is a kill zone. There is light cover if any at all, and we'd be sitting ducks for anyone smart enough to stage a few 'mecs within these woods. We'd be attacking across open ground to get to cover, from a weakened position." Ryan made eye contact with Sanada and nodded, "That's a very good observation nonetheless, Cadet. Thank you for your input." Clasping his hands behind his back, he addressed the rest of the lance, "Be advised that this is at least a battalion-sized mission, performed by only one lance. Get used to it, this is how we operate in the field. This mission is all about aggressive action. We hit so hard, so suddenly, that the enemy loses it's will to fight as soon as battle is engaged. Now on that note, Here is what I've brought up as a strategy. But be prepared for any *FRAGO's as the situation dictates." Turning back to the map, Ryan began. "We will be dropping here at NAV point ALPHA. From this point we will go westward toward our secondary objective, BETA. About three KLICKS and across this river is a small pocket of woods, We will high tail it to this spot and consolidate." Ryan pointed the first part of the route out Sanada indicated. "Two of us, Sidewinder three and four will then move to scan the downed drop-ship, while Sidewinder two and I provide overwatch from this position." Looking up at his lance with a mischievous grin he said, "First FRAGO of the day, I'll be participating in this exercise as a combatant as well as a grader." Turning his attention back to the map, "We will then move north to this first pocket of forest area and regroup. Once we do this, we will move straight west into this other pocket of forest area. We will remain in commo the whole time we're in the first leg, people. Communication on the battlefield is vital." He pointed the center part of the map "Once we reach this area, we will be in range of their scanners. If they detect us they will probably try to run an intercept of our comms. We will then retain radio silence from this point. The only person authorized to break radio silence unless we take contact is myself and the scout. Everyone else if you don't see anything out of the ordinary, stay silent. After we reach this small patch of forest to the west, we will immediately move north to this bigger area of woods. We will be moving fast as not to be left out in the open. But remember, we can only move as fast as our slowest 'Mec." "Once we reach this part here, sidewinder three and four will stage in this area here, and Sidewinder two and I will move to this position here. Once two and I have run a scan of these turrets to determine if we are to engage them or not, Three and four will move up to the hanger and engage any hostile forces. If they have air support, take it out first. Two and I, once the battle is engaged will move in and flank them from behind, assuming we don't have to deal with the turrets. If we have to engage the turrets first, then three and four will sit tight in cover until two and I draw their fire, then you will flank from the rear." Looking up from the map he glanced at his watch, '0650' "Any questions, gripes, groans or concerns regarding our battle plan? Be in mind, it is subject to change at any moment depending on circumstances" *FRAGO- Fragmentary Order- Term for changing battle plans and mission objectives on the fly TAG:@samuraikoku Oviraptor

As the lance was going to be the attacking party, Ryo hadn't considered the possibility of ambushes. The realization came to him as Panzer explained. Ambushing was not an area of his expertise, as the DCMS eschewed this kind of tactics more often than not. But Ryo was no fool, and had fought his way out of ambushes before, which helped him see Panzer's point. He understood that in such cases the potential time they could win, should they have followed his plan, could have been met with a great delay at best, and disaster at worst. And that certainly wasn't a risk he was willing to take under the circumstances of the mission, not to mention the test itself.
He bowed at Panzer. "Right sir, my apologies. I agree that ambushes are something we definitely don't need if we're to move fast. It would severely hamper us at best, and we could be annihilated at worst." Still, it wasn't a total loss, as Panzer agreed with his entrance point to the first objective. Certainly his misstep, if that's what it had been, could be attributed to lack of experience in mercenary tactics. But at any rate, the fact that he was willing to voice a plan shouldn't have made a bad impression upon his evaluation. The other pilots had been quiet, and Ryo was brave enough to have broken the silence. Nevertheless, Ryo didn't think of this any further as he followed Panzer's plan. He definitely agreed with the concepts of hitting hard and suddenly, which he somewhat had aimed for while thinking of the path with least resistance. He learned that he had to provide overwatch from behind, which wasn't entirely bad. He figured this could have been done on purpose, as Ryo's 'Mech was best suited for close combat. Fighting out of one's element was always a welcome challenge for him, and his 'Mech's PPC and Medium lasers served to insure that it wasn't helpless at a distance. Then the lance would move from the outside part of the forest to the west, which Ryo had considered as a longer route. This was also further away from the airfield defenses, which definitely helped the element of surprise, unless as he mentioned, that side of the airfield was guarded. But, Ryo analyzed, eventually the lance would come into contact with opposition, sooner or later. As the most important part of the mission was quickness, as long as the lance could get to the objectives quickly before engaging, it would save plenty of time. The exciting part, however, was the possibility of having to draw turret fire. Ryo was a brave man, which showed in his first plan choice, so he had no problem with acting as a target, more so if it would allow for other forces to get the job done. The one thing he didn't know, however, was the speed of the rest of the pilots' 'Mechs. His own 'Mech was decent enough at 97 Km/h, but of course there were much lighter and faster ones out there. He would do his best effort to move as quickly as possible. And then, of course, was the chance of FRAGOs. But in Ryo's mind, that was only another test. Flexibility, after all, was what Faizan and Wilds had stressed in their previous speeches, and it was an essential part of combat. Murphy's laws of combat, after all, say that "No OPLAN ever survives initial contact.", and Ryo was perfectly aware - or at least as perfectly aware as one can be before a mission.
Ryo nodded one more time.

Éamon carefully studied the map in front of him. He liked the straightforwardness of the mission - go in, secure the area, shoot anything that shoots back, do it quickly. He was not terribly enthusiastic about the lack of intel on what type of enemey forces they'd be facing or the number of said enemies, but that was life, he supposed. You didn't always know everything. There was not much to consider in terms of tactics. If there was little resistance, it would be a simple mission. If things got hairy, they'd have to improvise. Still, to facilitate improvisation he would need to know as much as possible about the capabilities of his team. "Two questions, sir. Firstly, what mechs will we be piloting and what kind of armament will we have at our disposal? Secondly, how are we to treat any non-combant personnel we encounter in the facility?" Privately Éamon didn't think he could kill an unarmed person in cold blood, virtual or not. Combat was one thing, and generally if someone was sitting in the pilot's chair of a mech they knew what they were getting into, but murder was another. He hoped it wouldn't come to that. Finally the young man - whose name Ryo learned was Éamon Fitzpatrick - spoke, springing two questions. Ryo figured Éamon didn't have a 'Mech of his own as he had the Red Demon of War, but the fact that he asked about available weapons betrayed that he knew a bit about a 'Mech's strengths and weaknesses, and that was always a good sign.
The second question was interesting. Éamon seemed to have some standards, even if still in his youth. Ryo was already a battle-hardened warrior, but he still retained the code of the warrior he received from his proud family, and he was not about to betray it. It was very refreshing to see that this notion of honor still remained alive, and much more so if the Gun Special Squadrons adhered to it.
Knowing that the questions were for Dragoon Panzer to answer, he remained silent, but nodded at the young man. He would, however, be ready to talk if he was asked about his 'Mech. Attn.: Oviraptor, anonymousjerk, SaintB, Huck n' Roost

Combat was one thing, and generally if someone was sitting in the pilot's chair of a mech they knew what they were getting into, but murder was another. He hoped it wouldn't come to that. Ryan nodded, satisfied that finally someone other than Sanada had something to say. "Okay, first thing's first. This goes to all of you. I am not a sir. No offense to the officers standing in the room with me, but I work for a living, therefore I don't get the honorific of 'Sir'. 'Sir' Is for officers, pimps, and politicians. Dragoon Panzer, or Dragoon will suffice. Now that that's out of the way." He turned his attention to Eamon, "The mec' you will be using is the 'mec that you own personally. That's one of the reasons why this simulation took so long to develop is because they had to get everything about your mec' perfect, as no two mecs are alike. If you do not have a mec, you will get a list of pre-made 'mecs to choose from before you enter the sim. I don't know about everyone's 'mec here, but mine is a Centurion. Lady Luck has a versatile load-out, capable of long range, medium and close quarters." Clasping his hands behind his back, Ryan continued; "And furthermore, we do -not- by any means engage civilians or non combatants. I know other merc companies do it, and if you want a piece of that action, go join them and good riddance. If you do breach that protocol, we will punish you according to our policy. In short, you -will- be hanged." He glared around at the candidates to make his point clear, "That being said, collateral damage is sometimes unavoidable. It's unfortunate, but war isn't all rainbows and kittens. But if you can, it is strongly advised that you lead the enemy away from heavily populated areas before engaging in open battle. This simulation may or may not include that element, I am not at liberty to say but you can assume that all targets at the airbase are hostile. Barring that if you're not sure, wait until you have positive identification of the enemy before you open fire." Gesturing to Sanada, Ryan said "You may tell us about your mec' if you wish as well. We'll all find out one way or the other anyhow." TAG: SaintB Oviraptor @samuraikoku Huck n' Roost

Panzer's words sounded great to Ryo's ears. The Draconis Combine didn't particularly care about civilian casualties, and in some dark moments in its history it was the culprit of civilian massacres - the most notorious being Kentares IV. The Sanada family was particularly illustrious for not taking part in any of these, and Ryo would keep things that way. It was also thanks to his staunch denial to take part in such actions that he was made a target for the Kokuryu-kai, which started the chain of events that would drive him into becoming a mercenary, and fight under his own terms. Were it up to him, he'd be happy to show anyone who dared attacking unarmed civilians a demonstration of his swordsmanship skills - in the form of a sword coming down on their neck.
With that question answered, the briefing turned into the matter of the available 'Mechs and their equipment. This was a crucial part of the plan, as it was important to maximize weapon efficiency. His own 'Mech, which was known as the Red Demon of War, had some rather unconventional weapons, which Ryo was happy to explain about since he was the one to have equipped them.
Ryo acknowledged Panzer's address to him. "Right, Dragoon Panzer." He gave a general glance before explaining."My 'Mech, which is known as the Red Demon of War, is a Phoenix Hawk. It's ranged weapons are energy-based, as it is equipped with a Particle Projector Cannon (PPC) at long range, and medium lasers for medium range. It packs a good punch there, but its true strength is at close range... since it's got a vibroblade, courtesy of Solaris VII, and a sword - Draconis Combine-style." - He grinned wickedly. - "These are my own personal touches, and they're quite effective in the right hands. Tons of weight suddenly coming down with brute force can be absolutely devastating not only to a 'Mech, but also to its pilot. Physical damage of this particular kind is something few are prepared for." He resumed his no-nonsense expression, and continued."Its top running speed is close to 100 Km/h, not too bad for a medium 'Mech. At an average speed it's 65 Km/h. Since it has a ferro-fibrous armor it is quite resilient, so drawing fire isn't a problem. The battlefield's climate and temperature conditions aren't a problem here either, so we don't have to worry about it overheating. It's somewhat of a danger in high temperatures due to its amount of energy-based weapons, and more so in the case of an Alpha Strike*. However, it's reasonably prepared for such a circumstance due to having 12 double heatsinks. The main danger for it is encountering anti-armor weapons, such as Gauss rifles or auto-cannons, as they could put the Demon in a serious predicament. But then again - there's only so much a MechWarrior and their 'Mech can do on their own, so that's what lance-mates are for." He stood at ease after his explanation. He could have gone on the 'Mech's history, notable battles and technical specifications, but time was valuable and he was a man who never said two words when he could say only one, so he made sure to say nothing more, and nothing less, than what the squad needed to know. As he observed the probies and Panzer go back and forth on various details, the proverbial gears in Faizan's head were whirring away and forming linkages all the while. Primarily he was gauging how they were reacting to the lack of information regarding enemy garrison dispositions or even the status of the dual PPC turrets. So far he'd liked mostly what he'd heard, although at this point things were devolving into bragging and posturing regarding their respective mechs. The time had come to reel things in, so he did so by first loudly clearing his throat. Once he had four sets of eyes Faizan set about clearing something up. "To clarify, Dragoon Panzer is technically correct, the simulators were programed to simulate specific mechs for specific individuals. However, you're not getting to pick and choose at will. When everyone filled out their initial applications we were taking note of previous experience, including the last mechs you were either assigned to or currently own. So while Dragoon Panzer does have his Centurion and Mr. Sanada will have his Phoenix Hawk to utilize in simulator mode, Mr. Fitzpatrick and Ms. Yodfa will be assigned to the last mechs you listed as having any sort of seat-time in and according to the notes I have for this test that means Mr. Fitzpatrick will be piloting a simulated Chameleon CLN-7V, and Yodfa you'll be piloting a..." Up until that moment Yodfa had been content to sit at the back of the group and just listen, but the second that factoid was mentioned her ears suddenly perked up and her eyes widened before a monosyllabic yet rather forceful word escaped from her throat. "No..." Faizan continued on without acknowledging Yodfa's apparent growing horror. "...Archer ARC-2W." The growl that escaped Yodfa's throat this time was somewhere between aggrivation and outright indignation. "Do I have to captain? That damn mech is a walking ammo bin explosion waiting to happen!" Faizan simply shrugged and continued his deadpan expression. "Really? It seems to work just fine for the Dragoons, and they're pretty successful... duplicitous nature as Clan vat-bred mutants and infighting aside of course. Besides a pair of LRM-20's can be real security blanket even without CASE." Yodfa however wasn't quite done protesting. "Surely there's another way Captain. I also indicated that I piloted a Stalker..." This time Faizan cut her off. "Yes I did read that. You did indeed pilot a Stalker... for all of one shakedown run and one patrol before it was sold off anyway." The nature of Faizan's face changed subtly, but significantly, and to anyone observing would have felt rather icy in a hurry. "You can either pilot the Archer or you can see yourself out of the airlock. You're here to prove you have what it takes to complete one of our missions, not politik like some minor noble with more so-called herritage than brains." Yodfa seemed to get the message quickly and back off, although it was clear that at least in her mind the issue was not resolved. Faizan for his part seemed to file the entire incident away and look at the rest of the ad hoc lance. "Any other questions? Last chance before we launch." The Lt. Colonel returned to his seat and watched. This part was all delegated to Captain Faizen and Dave was content to simply observe for now. What he hadn't told him was that this was a much a test for the Captain and the Dragoon as it was for the probationary pilots who were taking part, a test of leadership and patience. @samuraikoku Huck n' Roost anonymousjerk Oviraptor

Éamon felt slightly stupid for asking about the mechs. His family had no history of mercenary work and very little money, which meant no mech. Panzer had his own, naturally and Sanada had the Phoenix Hawk, and though he was not alone in his mechless state, it had always been a slightly sore spot for Éamon. He'd gotten his fair share of abuse from his classmates here at Tri-M, most of whom were at least second generation pilots. He'd always been good at ignoring such people, but sooner or later they always got to you. They could go fuck themselves anyway. He was here, they were not. That was all that mattered. He felt bad for the girl, Yodfa. She was clearly upset about being stuck with the Archer (and knowing what he did about the Archer, he was not surprised) and the test they faced would be hard enough without piloting a mech you were not comfortable with. Still, he couldn't help her now. He just had to focus on the mission.

Ryo noticed a dejected look in Éamon in the talk about the 'Mechs. He supposed it might have to do with him not owning a 'Mech."The fact of owning a 'Mech isn't as important as the ability to pilot one", he thought. He himself didn't technically own a 'Mech until the Red Demon of War was passed on to him, and in his time as a Draconis Combine soldier he had witnessed many wealthy pilots owning their own 'Mechs, but lacking severely in their abilities. That cost many of them their lives, as he saw in his maiden battle in the defense of Luthien.
He didn't know what to make of Yodfa's pleading about the Archer. Ryo had seen many during his time as a Galedon Regular, straight out of the Academy, but there seemed to be nothing wrong with them, and technical specifications seemed generally positive. He never had the experience of piloting one though, so he honestly couldn't say one way or the other. He was only concerned that this would affect the mission. But whichever the case, he'd be ready as he could be. Then Faizan spoke one more time:
"Any other questions? Last chance before we launch." He had nothing more to say or ask at this point. "I'm all squared away, sir."

Nodding, Ryan addressed the lance, "You all heard the Captain, time to stop comparing 'Mec sizes, and get to work. If there's nothing else" He paused to give a pointed look at Cadet Yodfa, "An Archer's a fine mec if used right. You need to learn when to argue with your leadership, and this was one of those times where you nod, smile, and eat the shit sandwich." turning to address the rest of the lance he said "Saddle-up. Get to your stations." Turning smartly on his heel, he assumed the position of attention and snapped a crisp salute at the Captain, "We're ready, sir. They had waited long enough, and Panzer had hit upon the nail. The time for questions was over. "Alright then, the simulators are through this hatch..." Faizan stood next to the controls for the hatch opposite of the one into the hallway. "... inside your name will be taped to an individual simulator pod, and your neurohelmet and cooling gear will be sitting next to that pod as well. Once the first boot gets past the entry, you will have two minutes to put them on and complete the startup sequence. After that the mission will start." Almost immediately and without any sort of warning Faizan pressed a button and flipped the toggle on the control, and the hatch opened with an audible hisss-thunk as the actuators retracted and the heavy door came to rest against the inner frame. All the while, Faizan simply folded his arms and looked nonchalant, as if he were waiting to be impressed by the first person to go charging over the threshold. Yodfa for her part didn't make much of a move to do so, simply staring at the now open portal to the simulators on the other side. Perhaps she was consumed by unasked questions that she first thought about, or contemplating what might happen after she made it this far that could go awry, or maybe it was a matter of collecting her thoughts and realizing she'd actually gotten that far, further than she'd ever have working for Bowie Industries in any capacity she had up until that point. Whatever it was, she wasn't moving. TAG: @samuraikoku Oviraptor anonymousjerk SaintB

It was finally time. Ryo had been standing at attention, and simply moved in instinctively. He stood upright and strode proudly into the hatch. He didn't even think anything different - such was the way of the Samurai, the way of the Draconis Combine, and the way of the Sanada family. He entered through the hatch and found his pod, in which he got in, then equipped his neurohelmet and cooling gear."It is time." - He thought as he waited for the simulation to begin. - "For the Sanada." Éamon followed Ryo through the door without hesitation. Finding the pod with his name above it, he quickly pulled on his cooling suit and donned his neurohelmet. After double checking his gear, he swung himself down into the pod seat and fastened the restraints. He automatically began running through the pre-mission mech startup sequence. On the surface he was cool, calm and the picture of professionalism. Beneath the visor he was sweating buckets. As the pod displays flickered into life, he reached up and secured the hatch with a loud bang. Once alone he took a gulp of air and, for the second time that morning, tried in vain to stop the butterflies in his stomach. This was it. He reached into the breast pocket of his suit (no mean feat in the confines of the pod) and took out a photo of his parents, taken on their wedding day. One of the few he had from when his mother was still alive. He allowed himself five seconds, then put it back into the pocket. There was no more time for sentimentality. Ryan silently waited for his lance to file through the door before he followed. Stopping long enough to grab Yodfa's arm and drag her physically through the door he said to her, "I will only say this once, Cadet. Give yourself a fair shake eh? you're good enough to make it this far, you just might make it in the brigade, you got me? if you don't do this, you will regret it for the rest of your life. Suit up, stop gawking, and get ready for the test. After guiding her to her pod, Ryan turned and got suited up as well. Once in, he closed the hatch and started the boot-up sequence with the ease of long practice. TAG: Huck n' Roost @samuraikoku SaintB Oviraptor

Ryo inputted the code for his neurohelmet, and the boot-up sequence initiated. This was a standard security measure, and in the case of the Sanada it was passed on through word of mouth, having been recorded only once, and stored under maximum security. Only a member of the Sanada family knew the code for the Red Demon of War.
The cooling vest was rather heavy to wear, but Ryo was used to it as he had donned his own several times. Inside the pod the heat was building up, but the vest was working as supposed to.
It wasn't long before the 'Mech's boot-up was complete, and the standard 'Mech interface appeared in Ryo's visor, showing the data for temperature, weapon systems, 'Mech movement (as the mission hadn't yet started, these numbers were at zero). Temperature was at its default minimum for the Demon's boot up, all weapons were working, and there seemed no problem. All systems were go.
He only had to wait until the Lance leader asked for the lance's report.
"Sidewinder 2, standing by."

For a moment Yodfa stiffened when Panzer grabbed her arm, but she met his hard gaze when he spoke, "I will only say this once, Cadet. Give yourself a fair shake eh? you're good enough to make it this far, you just might make it in the brigade, you got me? if you don't do this, you will regret it for the rest of your life. Suit up, stop gawking, and get ready for the test."and dutifully went where he guided. All the while the words he spoke sank in to some effect, though how deeply was anyone's guess. Clearly she was there for some reason while others had fallen by the wayside, and that was enough to motivate Yodfa once more. Hurriedly throwing on her cooling vest and jacking in her white neurhelmet sporting the Bowie Industries logo on the back her hands became a blur, repetitive motions over the past few days turning into muscle memory and therefore booting the simulator without a hitch. First the screens started to flicker in succession, then raw data in falling binary form, then startup screens. Finally as she jacked into the cooling system and pulled the neurohelmet over her head she got final confirmation that the simulated Archer was fully operational via the now familiar refrain that most mechwarriors were accustomed to in one fashion or another, and the viewscreens flickered to life showing rolling hills, a temperate forest and a babbling river for the moment Yodfa was all business. Keying up the comms-transmit button her voice carried two messages. "Sidwinder 3 online and standing by Was the words. The tone indicated that whatever hesitation she had experienced outside of the sim pod was, for the moment, pushed down. Now she was all business at hand. After the last simulator pod door had closed Faizan walked up to a slightly raised station that looked over all the simulator pods. In front of a chair were various screens and controls, and at the chair was a slightly disheveled-looking individual with calloused hands and a uniform that while clean had obviously been grubby over and over in the past thanks to stitches and splotches here and there. If there was ever anyone that screamed "technician" in the Inner Sphere, and chief GSS technician Billy McDavis was such a man. Walking over to his right Faizan slipped in next to him and took up another chair and bank of monitors, nodding and acknowledging his presence. "Good morning DMG McDavis. Thanks again for setting all of this up, god knows it wasn't easy and if it were left to me I'd still be trying to figure out how to get past the starting menu. Any problems so far?" Faizan looked up from the monitor to acknowledge the presence of Bear as well before looking down at the monitors, flipping between views of the simulated mechs as well as internal pod cameras focused on the faces of all four mechwarriors. Ryan Panzer booted his mec' up with no problems, having done it hundreds of times before. Once his mec was online, he ran a systems check to ensure that nothing was amiss. He was about to engage comms when he heard over the radio, "Sidwinder 3 online and standing by". Nodding, he switched to the all frequency and said over the comms, "All sidewinder elements, this is sidewinder one. Perform necessary functions checks and report status when you're up. How copy, over?" # 'how copy' is the short way of saying 'do you understand me'

The Lt. Colonel also took a seat on the platform with McDavis and Faizan and peered over their shoulders at the displays. The probies were getting ready to go but he noticed that Yodfa seemed to be a little rattled at first - that was no good. "Billy, I want to see if Yodfa can handle pressure. She almost threw a fit when she was assigned to the Archer and she looked out of it while suiting up. Simulate some gremlins in the fusion engine so that the power fluctuates a bit for a while, this rig can do that right? If you can don't make it bad enough to interfere with combat but mess up some of the ancillary systems like the lights in her cockpit." Huck n' Roost

Nodding, Ryan tweaked a few things in his HUD before answering, "Rodger, that's a good copy sidewinder 4. All Sidewinder elements, listen up." He paused for a moment, eying the bobble-head Atlas doll glued onto his control console. Smirking and shaking his head in amusement he continued, "Order of march will be sidewinder two, sidewinder three, sidewinder one, and sidewinder four, break. Keep a fifty meter interval and we will be heading out in the standard wedge formation, stack right, break. Sidewinder four make sure to keep checking our six when we're rolling. How copy?" Ryan stopped long enough to give the doll a little flick with his finger, for luck. "I see they made it EXACTLY like my MEC'" he thought to himself as he grinned appreciatively. Ryo fully heard Panzer's message. Him being Sidewinder 2, it meant he would take point. "Excellent!" - He grinned to himself. - "This is what I do best." Reaching out for comms, he spoke in a clear, steely voice. "Solid copy, Sidewinder 1. All systems online, moving to position now, over." - He finished as he started advancing to his required position in the formation.

"Solid copy Sidewinder 1. I've got your back, over". Éamon checked everything for a third time. Power levels normal, weapons online, sensors all functional, everything was as it should be. He was ready to go. SaintB anonymousjerk Huck n' Roost @samuraikoku

Nodding wordlessly at Bear's order, McDavis tapped a few buttons on the consoles in front of him in a deliberete and semi-expedient speed. Evidently he wasn't on his first cup of coffee and it wasn't having the same effect that it normally did. In her simulator pod, Yodfa's radio burst to life with a set of instructions from their erstwhile lance leader. "Order of march will be sidewinder two, sidewinder three, sidewinder one, and sidewinder four, break. Keep a fifty meter interval and we will be heading out in the standard wedge formation, stack right, break. Sidewinder four make sure to keep checking our six when we're rolling. How copy?"Followed by confirmation from Sanada "Solid copy, Sidewinder 1. All systems online, moving to position now, over."Then Fitzpatrick. "Solid copy Sidewinder 1. I've got your back, over"She was a millisecond away from hitting the transmit button and confirming the order herself when a flickering of screens caught the corner of her left eye. Some of the secondary screens and panels had indicated some sort of power fluctuation in her fusion engine and resultant intermittent power surges and wanes in tertiary systems, and while nothing else seemed to be affected Yodfa didn't want to leave it to chance. Pressing the transmit button she updated her lance, "Sidewinder 3 to Sidewinder Lance, stand by, correcting a display fault." Before taking something out of either her boots or her shorts that was out of view of the in-pod camera, then going to work on the left panel. There was a muffled clunk, then a few tiny pops and snaps followed by a rapid succession of peeps and chirps before she sat back up and keyed the transmit button again. "Sidewinder 3 to Sidewinder 1, problem corrected and copy your instructions and executing. Over." Bumping the throttle forward ever so slightly the simulator pod shook and swayed with simulated footfalls as the digitally rendered Archer crept forward to get into position. Staring at the monitors the whole time, Faizan had tried to follow Yodfa's action but had given up about the time she pulled something that he couldn't see. Resorting to the dossier info that he carried with him Faizan gave McDavis and Bear an odd look before thumbing through her information. When he did find what he was looking for he couldn't help but grin ever so slightly and chuckle. "Bowie Industries engineer, test pilot and eventual plant security guard during the Civil War. I'd say she knows what an actual fusion generator gremlin looks like and sniffed out that little test in a hurry. I'll give her this much, if every mechwarrior understood the intricacies of battlemech systems like her and how to fix them techs like our dear Dragoon MG McDavis here would be able to actually sleep for more than 3 hours in a row." Movement: 5kph to get into position for wedge formation. Attack: None Utility: Transmit indicated fusion reactor fault, re-set fusion power display and panel lighting wire couplings, transmit to lance confirming orders for wedge formation. "Sidewinder 3 to Sidewinder 1, problem corrected and copy your instructions and executing. Over." Ryan nodded, glad he wasn't wrong about Yodfa so far. Keying up his radio he replied, "Rodger, that's a good copy sidewinder 3. Now listen up all sidewinder elements, let's roll out to nav point Beta, watch your sectors and use intersecting lines of fire. We're burning daylight. Sidewinder 1 out." With that, Ryan moved his mech into position on the left and started a fast pace headed east, setting his passive long and medium range scanners.

"Rodger, that's a good copy sidewinder 3. Now listen up all sidewinder elements, let's roll out to nav point Beta, watch your sectors and use intersecting lines of fire. We're burning daylight. Sidewinder 1 out." The coordinates to Nav point Beta appeared in Ryo's HUD, so he turned to face its direction east, and started advancing at a straight pace. He made sure to keep the established distance between the rest of the lance. Given that the instructions in the briefing were to shut down comms unless addressed, he didn't answer in accordance.
