Is there a way to make the general part of the forum so that you can only see it when logged in? If so, what does the rest of the community think about this idea? Yep! I was planning on leaving the forum publicly viewable for the period when we were mostly just pulling in new people rather than saying much, but honestly, this has blossomed into a place where actual conversations happen quickly enough that I'm inclined to go ahead and make things private, unless anyone objects. The only question I have is which things should be private - the whole forum? Just General Chitchat? Some combination of subfora? You all tell me!

Actually, I take that back. Everything except for a thread explaining why everything is missing. Otherwise people will look at this place when we invite them and go "lol wtf nobody's home".

Is there anything in General Chitchat that desperately needs to be private? At the moment, I would assume not, since people wouldn't post private things there while it's public. I think it makes for a stronger community when at least that section is private, though, since it frees people up to talk about things they might want to share with the community but not with the world at large, whether that's "here is a serious thing that's going on with me" or just "here is a cute picture of my kid."

My current inclination is to make General Chitchat and Discussion & Debate private and leave Games and Moderation/Technical public, so that there's something visible when people first wander in but it's not likely to be anything private. I could also create a sticky thread in Moderation/Technical with a title like "WHY YOU DON'T SEE ANYTHING" to make this especially clear.

I'm inclined to agree with Poli's most recent suggestion. General should definitely be private, D&D probably could be as well.
Games don't really matter imo.

Alternatively, I can do as Divair suggests and create an additional, locked subforum that's literally just a thread saying "we have these things, but you have to register to see them!" I'm fine with either of those options.

General Chitchat and Discussion & Debate have been made private. If people feel that Mod/Tech or Games should also turn private, that can absolutely be arranged, but I feel like this is a good starting point. Have a celebratory privacy-penguin:

Am I the only one who actually dislikes this idea? Dunno, but I'm open to hearing what you dislike about it.

Am I the only one who actually dislikes this idea? Dunno, but I'm open to hearing what you dislike about it. I merely don't think it's necessary to make it impossible to see the forums unless you're logged in. It irritates me when I'm just surfing on my phone and want to see some threads. I don't log in on my phone because I haven't figured out how to set up a proxy there.

I have a proxy site for mobile surfing. I'll send it to you once I find it.

I'm fine with either of those options. Pretty much every other forum I've seen that does it usually has an entire subforum. Probably better than hoping they decide they want to explore technical. Am I the only one who actually dislikes this idea? Nope.

I kinda feel really terrible for bringing this up at all right now. Please don't. It was always my intent to have at least the General Chitchat forum viewable only by members - all you did was bring it up maybe a day or so before I would have independently.

Also, I am going to set up an empty "you must register to see the chatty bits" subforum later, because I do think that makes more sense than just stickying the thread here, but I'm in the midst of running errands and probably won't be able to get to it for a little while.

I don't understand the part about proxy things. I didn't meant to step on anyone's toes. I do want to understand and if someone would be willing to explain it to me I would like that. I kinda feel really terrible for bringing this up at all right now. No, don't feel bad. Nothing at all is your fault. It's just my own preference for keeping my location a secret, so I use a proxy to surf the web. But if Neo sends me that proxy site for mobile surfing, I'm totally fine with the shift.

Aaaand done. Wonder if that can't be its own separate category, before the General category. Also, what my regional forum does is make it not visible to people who are members (read: logged in).
