Okay, so, I have a maybe-possibly-beginning of an idea for a story-type semi-closed RP. I am considering stealing a significant chunk of the setting from the Kate Daniels series of novels by Ilona Andrews - to quote their description of said mechanic: So. Two questions for you all: 1. Would you want to play in this setting? 2. If so, have you read the books from which I stole this idea? (I ask because, if NOT, I may also use a modified version of a major antagonist from the same books. If any interested players HAVE read the books in question, I will not use that antagonist.) This is still just a maybe-possibly, so no promises that this game will happen even if I get enough interested players - like I said, I just have the verrrrrrrrrrry beginnings of an idea, and I'm not yet at all sure if it'll actually work. I'm interested. Sounds like an interesting world. I have not read the books. I would like to know a little more about how the mechanics of the waves of magic work, for writing purposes.

Sooooooorta, except the "technology" side is pretty much just "tech as we know it today," aside from some limited tech developed specifically for coping with magical problems (for example, there might be a lot more silver bullets on the market!), and keeping in mind that things like "government" and "basic infrastructure" are either outright gone or significantly diminished, so "cell phones" and "internet" and so forth are effectively kaput.

Essentially, at irregular and unpredictable intervals - could be a few hours, could be a few weeks, could be anything in between - the world will just...switch, without any warning. If you were driving down the road when a magic wave hit, your car would simply stop running and drift to a stop. If you were trying to perform a spell when a tech wave hit, the spell would immediately fizzle out. If you were under a curse, the curse wouldn't be reversible, but would cease to affect you any further than it has already - until the next wave hits, when it would immediately resume. Each wave, magic or tech, is effectively a giant pause button for its opposite force. There are a few limited exceptions - most notably, entities that ARE magic retain that magic during tech waves, but cannot PERFORM magic beyond what is inherent to them. So, for example, werewolves continue to be werewolves, and can still change forms - although it may be harder to do and harder to control during tech - but if a werewolf tries to, say, drink a magical portion during a tech wave, the potion will do nothing for them. Similarly, some very limited tech can, unreliably, continue to operate during magic waves - most notably landline phones, which will SOMETIMES work during magic (the rather wonderful explanation for this particular detail in the books is that, since magic is to some extent generated by people believing in shit without understanding it, and almost no one actually understands how phones work, they are effectively KIND OF magic).

So does friendship cease to exist during technology cycles?

Okay, so let's say a werewolf and a sorcerer are duking it out when a tech wave hits - bam! They're both just normal dudes now, and the sorcerer is just making silly gestures and the werewolf is just standing there naked and surprised? And on the flip side, let's say you're in that car that suddenly stops running when the magic wave hits -- do you have to get out and walk, or can you get out and fly? Or does the car have a percentage chance to turn into a pumpkin, maybe? What about if you're pumping gas when a magic wave hits? Does the gas get transformed into a magic potion and give your car magical powers until the next wave? These are the sort of questions that get asked when a potential player is unfamiliar with the source material. Also this sort of question: If the governmental and physical infrastructure of society is pretty much kaput, who provides service to the land line phones? Wow, they really are magic...

Well, with governments having failed and elections obviously become a thing of the past, the fundamental unit of an election count, the "electron" probably finds other things to do, in its own mysterious and totally fickle way...

Just a note that I have no particular preference but I'm sort of interested, perhaps after seeing the first game's progress so I can get myself in the right mindset (noting a parallel Sign-Up already existing, which while I'm tempted to join, would probably instead exercise my voyeuristic rights on, instead). I'm a veteran 1 of tabletop RPGing, particular favourites being pre-D20 Star Wars, Space: 1889 and Babylon 5 settings, so somewhat varied... except... I've just realised... the "space" theme. (But I've also done Cthulhu, too... if you ignore the fact that they're technically space-monsters... and there was a particularly interesting free-form Buffyverse, that I recall.) But full-fledged forum RP is a novelty to me. 1 As measured by "time served", rather than by counting the "battle honours" earned... Buffy... like buffy the vampire slayer? CAN WE?

I have to admit, the only one that's really grabbed my interest is X-men/superhero... Everything else has just gotten a "meh" or "neat, I guess"...
