OOC Thread.Greetings. Here you will find the official Out Of Character and sign-up thread for the Battletech forum-based RPG. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Battletech, it is nominally a franchise based upon a tabletop game that depicts mankind in the 31st century. A future where hundreds of systems have been colonized but no aliens civilizations have been discovered. Instead, man turned on man many times over since leaving the cradle of the species' origin, and that war has produced fantastic war machines that stalk the surface of multiple inhabited planets, and the most fantastic and iconic among them all is the battlemech However their reign as gods of the battlefield does not go unchallenged. Screaming down from space to deliver death with lighting speed are aerospace fighters, matching the raw firepower of battlemechs with velocity and daring: Now like any good RPG there are of course rules, and these are the ones that will govern this RPG. 1. The word of the GM is law. Myself and SaintB are co-GM's in this endeavor, and Chorozon is also an arbiter of technical and story details as well. Failure to heed final ruling will result in expulsion. 2. Do not post anything that would violate the terms of pro-boards and the rules of The Batcavern as written by butthead and Beavis. 3. Play nice. Yes interesting characters make an RP but no mary sues or attention-whoring will go unpunished. 4. All combat will be resolved by a posted formula. (will post soon) 5. No significant or major deviations from Battletech cannon. If it's not in the wiki, ask. If it's not in any of the source material either myself, SaintB or Choro have then it doesn't exist and no amount of wishing or pleading will make it exist. 6. Updates will come once a week at the very least. Depending on enthusiasm and the general thrust of the story it might be occuring twice a week, but that depends again on participation. 7. All playing characters will be either mechwarriors or aerospace fighter pilots. No exceptions. Non-playing characters will be considered on an as-submitted basis 8. Have fun. This is a game, and a group story. Things happen, conflicts will arise, but in the end it's a story in a fictional setting, so treat it as such. There is of course a Wiki for Battletech in general: www.sarna.net/wiki/Main_PageAnd game-based updates and rules will be posted on this initial page as well Now, those interested in signing up need a character, and the form to sign up is as shown below: Name:Call Sign:Age:Place of Birth:Physical Description or Photograph:Personality Overview/Traits:Biographical Information:Primary Occupation:Additional Occupation:Personal Equipment (weapons, survival packs, first aid kits, trinkets/heirlooms, etc.) :Personal Vehicles (Battlemech, Aerospace fighter, monocycle, WiGE etc. etc.) :For the Primary and Additional Occupations, pick one from each list below: Primary
Mechwarrior Aerospace Pilot Battle Armor Operator Infantry Commando Infantry Sniper Dropship Officer Dropship Crewman Maintenance Technician Additional
Brigade CO (SaintB only) Brigade XO (NDom84 only) Survival techniques trainer Procurement specialist Unarmed/close quarters combat specialist Small arms marksmanship instructor Tactical assessment specialist As things wear on or lightbulbs are switched, more will come obviously.
Now it is a time-honored tradition of some mechwarriors having their own Battlemech, and if you wish to have your own personal battlemech for your character you may do so. However, the following rules will be adhered to when creating a playing-character battlemech; - No designs that are any greater than Battle Value 2.0 of 1500 (BV 2.0 from this point forward)and produced within 3 years before the start of the RP (around 3067)
- No design will blend Clan and IS tech. Yes it is possible but the reasons for it are too much of a headache to contend with right now
- No "just cause" mechs. Either fill in the story behind how a character came by a mech or it won't be considered.

Name: Lt. Colonel David Wilds Call Sign: Gun Bear Age: 37 Place of Birth: Planet Hamilton (Free Worlds League)
Physical Description or Photograph: Dave earned his nickname Bear for being for lack of a better term: bearlike. Heavy, thick, and hairy. His hair is very red and grows thick on his body. He shaves daily but his stubble grows so fast that he has a five o'clock shadow by noon. He only stands about 177 cm (5'8") tall when he stands straight and usually walks and stands with a lazy looking hunch. His sharp green eyes seem to observe everything.
Personality Overview/Traits: On the job Dave is a consummate professional and possesses a quiet but usually jovial demeanor but off duty he can be a vociferous party animal. He is always polite and friendly to people unless he has reason not to be and though he is not above killing in a combat situation anyone who has spent enough time with him knows that it weighs on him heavily; regardless, he loves being a 'Mechwarrior.
Biographical Information: Being born into a military family in the Free World's League gave Dave lifelong access and experience with all sorts of vehicles including 'Mechs. While other kids played combat simulators young Dave was head first in actual working battlemechs and learning how they work, their, strengths, weaknesses, strategies, and of course how to use them. By 12 he was learning the art of how to control one of those gods of war; by 15 he went to a military school and was taught the basics of drill and combat; he attended Allison Mechwarrior Institute and graduated 3rd in his class in OCS and 2nd best in his Mechwarrior training at the age of 20. His career as an officer in the League's military should have been rather dull and unexemplary but the onset of Operation Revival happened just weeks after he graduated. As a rookie officer thrown into a war against a far superior enemy Dave (now known as Bear) managed to make the best of a bad situation and claimed several minor victories and racking up a very respectable personal kill count by 'fighting dirty'. He never engaged the much more powerful Clan Omnimechs on open ground and engaged in hit and run guerrilla raids; even doing this he still personally lost 4 separate Battlmechs in the field and was eventually taken as a POW but his internment did not last for long before the Truce of Tukayyid was signed and ended the war. His remaining 8 years where spent mostly doing garrison duties on backwater planets as a 'reward' for his 2 years of constant warfare. In 3058 he resigned his commission and took on work as an adviser and test pilot for Corean Enterprises. At the onset of the FedCom civil war him and a Co-Worker named Stacy Kessler founded Gun Special Squadrons and the two have run the company together for the previous six years. Unit History: 3048-3050 - Classified, Lt.Sr.Grade 3050-3058 - 3rd Fee World's Legionnaires, Force Commander 3061 Gun Special Squadrons, Lt. Colonel 3067 Bear's Brigade (GSS), Lt. Colonel
Primary Occupation: Mechwarrior Additional Occupation: XO - Gun Special Squadrons, CO - Bear's Brigade
Personal Equipment: Bear nearly always carries a stun stick and an auto pistol. On missions he keeps his battlemech stocked with a Federated Combat Carbine, a ballistic armored vest, plus an emergency medpack and survival kit in the case that he has to eject from his 'Mech in the field. Personal Vehicles: Custom Hellspawn named Lil' Darlin' bought in 3064 to replace his critically damaged Jenner after seeing action on the planet Emerson.
Spec sheet for a personal Battlemech:
Name: Lil' Darlin' Model: Hellspawn Class/Weight: Medium (45t) Chassis: GM Fury-M Endo Steel Engine: GM 270 XL Gyro: Standard Cockpit: Standard Heatsinks: 10 Double (Engine) Jump Jets: x6 Rawlings 80 Armor: Light Ferro Fibrous (9t) + CASE Layout: Right Arm: Md. Running Speed: 97.2 km/h Max jump Height: 180 meters BV: 1,316 Overview: This custom Hellspawn was a prototype for an unreleased variant of the Hellspawn that was gifted to Dave Wilds as a gift from a FedSuns general after it was phased out of testing at GMs Talcott plant. He uses it as a mobile command, scout, and support 'mech in the field.

Name: Ryo Sanada Call Sign: Fighter Age: 33 years old Place of Birth: New Samarkand (Draconis Combine) Physical Description or Photograph:{Spoiler} Personality Overview/Traits: A serious, no-nonsense man that lives entirely to fight, Ryo rarely feels comfortable outside the battlefield. When battle isn't near, he spends his time training in hand-to-hand combat (both armed and unarmed martial arts). Though distant and cold, he is a civilized and polite man - he is a proud and educated warrior, after all -, and will fight bravely until the end regardless of consequences for his own life. He is loyal to allies and holds to the tenets of honor taught by Bushido when fighting, but will give no quarter to enemies. He prefers to attack fiercely at full speed and strength, then retreat to recharge and jump into the fray once more. This striking capability comes at the expense of being more exposed and vulnerable to enemy fire than other MechWarriors. However, he has a considerable resilience that allows him to take a respectable amount of punishment. In following this combat doctrine, he looks to honor an old Samurai proverb: "Be swift as the wind, silent as the forest, fierce as fire, and immovable as a mountain". Biographical Information: {Spoiler}Ryo Sanada is a former Chu-i (Lieutenant) from the Swords of Light BattleMech Regiments, the most elite military arm in the entire DCMS (Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery, the armed forces of the Draconis Combine). Born in 3034, he comes from a very distinguished family in New Samarkand - whose lineage might trace back to ancient Terran Samurai - and therefore he was raised a proud warrior from his early days in the tradition of Bushido, the Samurai code of honor. He graduated in 3054 from New Samarkand's own Sun Zhang MechWarrior Academy, the most prestigious military academy in the Draconis Combine, receiving upon graduation a daisho (a sword set composed of a katana and a wakizashi) that he bears proudly as a symbol of his status and honor.
After serving with distinction and a flawless record sheet, first in the Sun Zhang Cadres and later the Galedon Regulars, while simultaneously attending classes at the Sun Tzu School of Combat and the Pagoda for Luthien Officers to perfect his formation, and ultimately passing the rigorous tests and meeting the requirements to form a part of the Swords of Light, he was assigned to the 2nd Sword of Light Regiment in 3059; right on time for Operation Bulldog, the Star League's famous offensive against Clan Smoke Jaguar. He took part in the retaking of the world of Hyner from the Third Jaguar Cavaliers, which earned him his Chu-i rank and several commendations for valor.
The political upheaval during Theodore Kurita's period as Coordinator of the Draconis Combine had a direct effect on Ryo Sanada's life. Not long after Operation Bulldog, the 2nd Sword of Light Regiment allied with the Kokuryu-kai - also known as the Black Dragon Society -, a hardline counter-reformist group violently opposing Coordinator Theodore's policies. Placing loyalty above all else as Bushido requires, Ryo refused to fight against the Coordinator, and was in turn expelled from his unit and imprisoned in the desolate world of Albiero, in the event he could alert the ISF (Internal Security Force) or the O5P (Order of the Five Pillars), the secret services of the Draconis Combine.
After two years of imprisonment, he was released in 3062, but relegated to garrison posts by the superior command of the 2nd Regiment, still in the pocket of the Kokuryu-kai. In this difficult position, Ryo was faced with the choice of committing seppuku, or fighting outside the DCMS. His honor not truly lost as a consequence of his own actions, but rather taken away by traitors to the Coordinator and the Combine, Ryo chose the latter. He became an arena jockey in Solaris VII, in the Combine district of Kobe (legendary announcer Duncan Fisher has praised him profusely ever since), but after winning a Championship Series, he eventually grew bored of the manufactured fighting and dissatisfied with the ilk of the "competition". Rumor came to him of the Gun Special Squadrons, and upon seeking them out and qualifying to join, he became a mercenary among their ranks. He now has returned to fight as the warrior he is, but under his own terms.
History:

Ryo received it directly from his father after he was admitted into the 2nd Sword of Light Regiment, as it was the greatest honor someone had achieved in his family. The PXH-1Kk is from the Star League Era, developed by House Kurita itself, and this model dates back to Ryo's great-grandfather, who was the first among the family to serve behind its cockpit. It still retains its six Icarus Jump Jets from that era, although it has been repeatedly modified over time.
This 'Mech is much lighter than the standard PXH-1Kk model thanks to an extra-light engine and an Endo-Steel frame - installed by Ryo's father as a gift for him when he joined the 2nd Sword of Light -, which cut these components' weight down by half, allowing for a fair speed and maneuverability. The heatsinks have also been upgraded to double, with two additional ones installed in the engine, thus giving it a possibility to keep in the battlefield for more extended periods of time before having to recharge and dissipate waste heat.
It bears a Tiegart Maximum Extended Range Particle Projector Cannon on its left arm for long range strikes, which was installed by Ryo's grandfather in the Star League Era. For medium range, it is equipped with a pair of Diplan M3-XR Extended Range Medium Lasers, one on each arm. Its torso is equipped with two ExoStar Small Pulse Lasers for short range. But as if all these modifications weren't enough, Ryo himself equipped the Crimson Demon of War with perhaps its most effective and deadliest weapon.
Those who aren't obliterated by the Extended Range Particle Projector Cannon at long range, or stopped by the ER Medium and Small Pulse Lasers at medium and short range, will step directly into the range of a fearsome sword. This is a new kind of weapon, developed especially for the DCMS units, and deployed for the first time in 3058. Ryo had it installed right before Operation Bulldog, and he believes it was an important tool for having acquired his distinctions in the Hyner campaign.
It is important to mention however, that this 'Mech is not without its drawbacks. The amount of energy it utilizes may cause shut down - or even explosion - in ambients with hot enough temperature, due to potential slow dissipation of waste heat, and the risk of overheating is increased in an Alpha Strike (all of the 'Mech's weapons being fired simultaneously). The MechWarrior must also be wary of weapons effective against armor (such as Gauss rifles or Ultra Autocannons), as a solid hit to the 'Mech's 10.5 tons of standard armor could place it in a serious predicament.
But despite these cautions, in overall, this body and weapons configuration makes the Crimson Demon of War a deadly force well worthy of its name, to be respected and feared in any battlefield. Ryo Sanada's experience, skills and courage behind it ensure its effectiveness in the field of battle, and spell doom for whatever dares to stand in its way.

I sort of object to rule number five, in so far as I don't mind rewriting history at all if our campaign takes us in that direction. But this isn't my baby. To clarify, I don't mean major deviations as in "follow the plotline lock-step rarg!" More like no mech can suddenly do their best Gundam imitation due to "super secret experimental technology", stuff like that. This is real robot in the best sense so keeping it that way is ideal. Also if you'll all kindly look at the opening post I added a pretty Aerospace Fighter picture and added a battle value 2.0 and mech overview portion.

Alright, SaintB if you wouldn't mind looking back at the application form, things have changed for the personal battlemech specs, otherwise: Samu you're good to go, so... I'm thinking maybe we can get the first IC post up this weekend?

Name: Captain Trevor Faizan Call Sign: Devilfish Age: 35 Place of Birth: Ingress Physical Description or Photograph:Personality Overview/Traits: Ever calm and collected, Faizan rarely shouts or raises his voice significantly during combat operations, meaning if he is yelling then something is drastically wrong and needs to be addressed immediately. Having been a mercenary for all of his professional career, a graduate of both Tri-M and the Nagelring, fought against and survived Clan trueborn warriors rebels and House first-line units, and one of the last people to train under the legendary Greyson Carlyle he has a breadth of experience to draw from and prefers combined-arm tactics and unorthodox shifting approaches. Faizan also knows almost every "borderline" or "dirty" tactic in the book and won't hesitate to employ them if it means a tactical advantage, although blatant and heinous Ares Accord violations and non-professional conduct are off the table. Faizan operates as something of a "problem solver" for Colonel Wilds as well, tamping down issues that might crop up before they become a severe detriment to the unit. Away from his duties Faizan is still collected but much less clinical or deliberate in his demeanor, although the sense that the tactical gears in his brain are whirring away even in relaxed setting has been noted by more than one person. While not the hard-partying animal that some other mechwarrios might be he rarely turns down an invite to any celebration and will mingle accordingly. Faizan is also fond of all sorts of friendly sports, and a pickup game of soccer, hockey, baseball, or even zero-G rugby usually finds him at the center of the proceedings. He can also often be found riding his monocycle, Defiance Motors Bluestreak either on short technical demanding rides or longer less arduous ones. Although nominally growing up a faithful Zoroastrian Faizan is nominally agnostic on most days, claiming he's "had an argument with Mazda" at some point which lead to his current lack of faith. That being mentioned he still wears a set of prayer beads frequently used by adherents of the faith on his wrist and frequently is seen manipulating them when deep in thought, the intervals between the click of beads striking each other after being flicked by his thumb indicating when a major bridge of thought or an idea has been broached. Biographical Information: {Spoiler}Although he was raised since infancy on the planet of Small World, Trevor Faizan was actually born on the neighboring planet of Ingress. While he might not be aware of his "true" lineage, he doesn't care what it may be and considers the history and culture of the only family he's ever known his own. From an early age Faizan was exposed to mechs and was clearly fascinated by them. His father was a civil security patrolman and was posted to a station where security mechs were used, and on the combined farm and small port that both of his grandfathers owned and worked on there were industrialmechs that helped till the land or offload catches of fish. Another lesson learned at an early age what loyalty to a particular nation could bring. Privy to the war of 3039 and the rolling over of power from the Tikonov Republic to the Federated Suns, Faizan learned that allegiances were a fluid thing in the Inner Sphere, and not something that should be pledged outright. After his 17th birthday he had saved enough from summer jobs and had it matched by parents to book transport and first year lodging on New Avalon to attend the New Avalon Institute of Science. Or at least that was the idea as his family knew. Instead he booked passage on another transport entirely and made his way to Outreach.Only one month after setting foot on Outreach Faizan enrolled in the Tri-M Mercenary academy.
Working through his tuition as we went he quickly discovered that "rough and tumble" was a tame way of describing most of the applicants, and that blending piloting and gunnery was a lot different than plinking pests from the seat of a Ranchhand from 50 meters away and stationary. However he quickly adapted and eventually graduated in the top 5% of his class in early 3051. Having graduated in the middle of the Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere one would have imagined employment in a reputable mercenary command would be relatively simple for a top percentile graduate of Tri-M, however top slots were being quickly filled by veterans of successor states, leaving less renowned or notable commands as the only available slots. After signing up with the Tiger Sharks for a year and subsequently serving throughout the Chaos March Faizan endeavored to aim higher and secured a spot in the legendary Grey Death Legion, and things went from drull to fast once Faizan signed up.
Fighting against Clan Jade Falcon on Sudenten and Pandora proved to be a rather sharp and bloody introduction to the rigors of frontline mercenary combat. He grew and improved by leaps and bounds, and a gutsy tactical shift on Pandora involving disabling the field inhibitors of the PPC's that his Warhammer carried while the remainder of his lance set up a breakout. His actions were enough to convince famed tactician and GDL Commander Greyson Carlyle to send him to the Nagelring, where he made it a point to purposefully utilizie "lightweight" lance copositions in all combat training scenarios in order to cut the Lyran nobilities in their heavy and assault-class mechs to ribbons. Although he never displayed any of the posturing any of his peers were prone to, the lessons in socio-political interplay and their potential application outside of the Nagelring were another sharp lesson for Faizan. After returning to the Legion and assuming command of his own combined Recon/Combat lance Faizan was thrust into a different kind of war than the one he'd waged previously. Skye Separatists launched their attack on the Legion's homeworld of Glengarry, and Faizans new leadership lessons were put to the test after escaping arrest and waging a guerrilla war against the Separatists until the rest of the Legion arrived along with re-enforcements from the Northwind Highlanders. Faizan stayed with the Legion until it's destruction in 3064. Flash-blinded by laser fire impacting the cockpit of his Warhammer and ejecting in the early moves he was forced to sit out the fighting while the Legion died a slow and painful death. Opting out of a contract with Defiance Industries he took his severance package and went about forging a new life as a freelance contractor.
After purchasing a ramshakle Sentinel STN-3M Faizan went about accepting short-term freelance contracts throughout the Fed-Com Civil War, often fighting for one side one month and the other the next. Eventually he found himself under the employ of an ad-hoc freelancer group fighting for the Federated Suns during the second Battle of New Avalon. Assigned to raid a Steiner firebase in the early opening moves the freelancer group he was with came under heavy fire from the Lyran combat lance which was set to guard the firebase's artillery emplacements. Despite admonishments to shift tactics and change their approach the freelancers lead by a bullheaded Davion junior officer pressed on, and Faizan was the only one that sruvived. Faizan managed to survive for a week while a second assault was organized, this time in the form of the Guns Special Squadron. By that point most of his armor had been stripped away and he was reduced to the medium laser, but he had held out for a week and attacked key points whenever he could get away with it, precluding the installation of Arrow IV artillery emplacements. After returning with the GSS detachment to their base of operations on New Avalon, the leader of the unit (one Lt. Col David "Gun Bear" Wilds) was so impressed by the week of survival and combat operations that he offered a temporary contract for the duration of the FedCom Civil War, then a permanent place after wars' end in light of his continued performance on the battlefield in combat and tactical assessment and application. Primary Occupation: Mechwarrior Additional Occupation: Brigade XO Personal Equipment (weapons, survival packs, first aid kits, trinkets/heirlooms, etc.): Grey Death hybrid pack (survival, commando, first aid rolled into one), survival knife, hand hatchet, Hawk Eagle auto-pistol, Blazer rifle, extended-length cooling vest, neurohelmet, rangefinder binoculars Personal Vehicles (Battlemech, Aerospace fighter, monocycle, WiGE etc. etc.): Lightly modified Bluestreak monocycle, DRG-1C Dragon "Big Bastard" Name: "Big Bastard" Model: Dragon DRG-1C Class/Weight: Heavy/60 Tons Chassis: Standard Engine: VOX 300 Light Gyro: Standard Cockpit: Standard Heatsinks: Double, 10 (10 in engine) Jump Jets: None Armor: Ferro-Fibrous plus CASE (10 Tons, CASE LT and RT)

Running Speed: 86/4 km/h Max jump Height: 0 Battle Value 2.0: 1257 Overview: Built from a DRG-1N that had long ago been cannibalized for parts by technicians as a "shop queen", this particular DRG-1N was specced from the beginning under the mantra of "versatility through simplicity" and under the ageis of "use what's lying around". Since the construction of the mech started near the end of the FedCom Civil War, plenty of parts were lying around to be sure. Powered by an Eisdach 300 Light fusion engine, the Big Bastard (an intentional play on one Col. David Wild's "Little Darling" Hellspawn) mounts a GM Whirlwind A/C-5 on the right arm backed by one ton of standard ammunition and one ton of specialized munitions (frequently either armor-piercing or precision) to engage effectively across a wide envelope of ranges and frequently utilizes. A pair of Diverse Optics Sunfire ER Medium Lasers come in to play as the mech closes the distance to a target, and at short ranges a Holly SRM-4 backed by two tons of ammunition can exploit any damage already done by the autocannon or laser. A lso while not strictly a weapon a hand has been added to the left arm, and while not Trevor Faizan's forte he isn't above a well-placed steel first or improvised weapon. Finally to maximize any sort of artillery or indirect fire support available the mech mounts a Cherryseed Bullseye TAG module. To ensure extreme precision and to cut down on wasted shots all the weapons are tied to the targeting and tracking system through an Optsight-360 Tru-Shot Targeting Computer and an O-P Laser Guidance Artemis IV Fire Control System, and to find camouflaged targets a Cyclops-BSP Beagle Active Probe is mounted in the left torso. Protected by 10 tons of ferro-fibrous armor with 1 ton of case to guard against ammunition explosions, the mech is designed to be able to flow from engagement to engagement and dish out as much punishment as it takes. This is all in theory of course, because as of 3067 the mech has yet to see any real combat.

So since we only have 3 playing characters up so far... would anybody be disappointed if the launch of the actual playing RP was pushed back a bit? I gather there are least two people who would join in plus others, so maybe a little extra time on the clock wouldn't go amiss.

Whatever time you need Dom. Oh I have the outline of the opening post ready to go, no worries there. Buuuuut... so far it's only you, Samu and myself with approved characters, so there would have to be some serious fluff. If one more person applied we could launch in my estimation, no doubt. Technically I could launch it now. Buuut... the narrative and input would be a bit linear methinks. So maybe a buffer to give people time to tweak characters would be a good thing.

Is this still a thing? And when would it be being a thing?
I tried a mafia roleplay back in the GM days and I'm not sure I was on the same page as everyone else, so I have no idea how good I'll be at forum based roleplaying. I'm not big on shoot 'em up, so it's not combat I'm worried about.
But I loved me some Battletech back in the day (and when I say "back in the day", my first Battletech set was from when it was still called Battledroids...). But being old school I never kept up on the clans, which is about when I stopped playing. I like the complete unsubstainability of O.G. Battletech, both as a setting and as a franchise you make money on. The way it was set up, like the gentleman's agreement to not attack jump ships because no one knew how to build them and once they were gone humanity was stranded, or that 'mechs weren't being manufactured anymore so you had to hold yours together the best you could lest you become dispossessed. But how do you sustain that as a franchise? Release supliments that say, "Well, it's 3060 and there are no more Warhammers in the Inner Sphere anymore, so tear that page out of your books. Also, whatever six packs short range missile launchers you have on your mechs, that's the last of them. So, try not to get yours blown up."
So I understood that they had to do the clans, but I liked it when things were a little more strange and desperate. Which is a long way to go around to say I don't know where the boundaries are.
My rough concept right now for a character would be someone from the outer rim who had been planted by the colony in ComStar at a young age with the intent to steal a 'mech for his settlement, but when he tried to make off with a Wasp, he was caught almost immediately forced to eject and make a run for it. He's currently on the run acting as a dispossessed pilot hiding from ComStar and afraid to return to the outer rim empty handed. So, during his time at ComStar before the betrayal he kind of knows how the sausage is made, and being from the outer rim he's more than a little distrustful of Inner Sphere 'nobility' (Mechwarriors from the houses), but is also doing his best to pass as them, creating a bit of a 'man without a country' element to his existence...not at home in the rim or the inner sphere and never feeling that safe in the more established places because of his fugitive status from ComStar. He would at best be considered a novice pilot, having been trained through ComStar but without experience because as soon as the opportunity presented itself he tried to make a break for it.
I...um...also have a tendency to over do it in the background thing. I never do the personality because I usually find that in the playing while considering the background and the current situation.
But this is all based on a 3050 understanding of the universe in which it was understood that ComStar might have mechs but no real idea how much or what etc., and where they were the most mysterious thing in the sphere.
Ah, see, this is how out of the loop I've been, I thought 3050 was pre-clan, but apparently from some light googling to make sure I was remembering ComStar properly (mostly), 3050 was the invasion year...
I don't know...let me know if any of that works for you and when this might happen (was it in the OP and I missed it?) if it's a specific time type thing, or if you're even willing to deal with someone fumbling through a forum based RP for the firstish time. That character might need some updating. If it's cool and we're on the same page or at least same chapter I'll fill in the other details. Probably a skinny dude who looks like he's wearing his DUI court date suit.

Well since the plot follows the exploits of a small mercenary group it's not going to be much different then what you know where every weapon and 'mech is guarded jealously as the one ring. But the clan invasion and subsequent reforming of the star league creates a sort of renaissance for technology and new 'mechs are being produced and such.

Probably a skinny dude who looks like he's wearing his DUI court date suit. Well how about I give you the general backstory and let you go from there? The starting in-game date will be March 29th, 3067. You are indeed correct, the Clan Invasion has already concluded, as well as the Battle of Tukayyid (where the ComGuards first appeared), Reformation of the Star League Task Force Serpent and Operation Bulldog, the FedCom Civil War where the Federated Commonwealth has been fractured once again and several other events. As far as unit history is concerned... well SaintB has that, so if you wouldn't mind filling everyone in oh Saintly one. As ever, the wiki is ever helpful www.sarna.net/wiki/Main_PageHowever, if you want to go with the ComStar angle, the big bad eventually going to be the Word of Blake: www.sarna.net/wiki/Word_of_BlakeSo maybe you can come up with something along those lines or riff off of your original idea? As far as personality/history... yeah I see what you're saying, but I'd like to see at least a basic outline of the former. Nothing extreme or overaching, but something meaty y'know? Hopefully we can get started soon, so feel free to fire off an application when you think you have something workable.

The company's name is Gun Special Squadrons, it specializes in Asymmetrical Warfare - Scouting, Deep Penetration Raids, etc. Its basically special forces for hire. It was formed in 3062 by retired FWL Mechwarriors Stacy Kessler, and Dave and Jetta Wild. Stacy Kessler handled the funding and became the CO of the unit at the rank of Colonel and Dave handled the day to day operations as the Executive Officer at the rank of Lt. Colonel. They hired a former Draconis pilot named Jiro Namanota and used their lance of 'mechs for minor contracts related to the Fedcom war. They took their first major contract for Fedsun loyalists in 3064 and gained steady employment fighting for them throughout the civil war. They expanded in this time, merging with another merc company named Eddie's Irregulars and expanding to a total of 16 'mechs in two squadrons with dropships, its own technical staff, and a small aerospace component. They were part of the entire second campaign to defend New Avalon and in early 3067 are using their earnings and status to expand to a third squadron. They are also in the process of confirming one of two lucrative contracts on the periphery.
As a small company with three squadrons operating more or less separately and a total of about 20-24 'mechs operating in the periphery the whole scrape and scrounge concept CTOAN is used to is still very much alive.

Well the shooting won't start right away, so no need to put the petal to the metal... too hard I would like to say that I am still interested in this, despite not having a lot of time to write character fluff right now. Eh, the three posted so far is a lot of fluff, just as long as what you post looks like a character with some depth and not a setpiece, I think it'l be ok. You can always come back and add more later of course.

So here's the thing, I am very much interested in this rp but i COMPLETELY forget how to make a battle mech. (played the games, played tabletop too but still at a loss) I can make an app for my char that's no problem. Where I draw a blank is his mech. I'm sure you would appreciate it if i said more than "It has guns and stuff and can walk too" so I will join hopefully when I can get ahold of a manual or just stop being lazy and wiki it. Thank you

Or you can always pester your brother to come up with something awesome.

Name: Ryan Panzer
Call Sign: Shadow Wolf
Age:30
Place of Birth:Fianna
Physical Description or Photograph: Ryan stands around six feet tall and weighs 170 pounds. He has deep blue eyes and blonde hair cropped short in a military fashion. He is lean and well muscled as per the results of regular and almost obsessive exercise. His nose is slightly too small for his angular face, consisting of high cheekbones with full lips and a strong chin. He has a zagged white scar running from the bottom of his chin down his neck which narrowly misses his jugular and dissapears out of sight near his right collarbone. When exhausted or "Just feelin' his years" as he says he walks with a slight limp. He usually wears his standard duty uniform of the gun-bear special squadron with the insignia of the Eddie's Irregulars sown into the left sleeve, his trusty Callabian 29 .45 caliber ACP semi-auto pistol on his left leg in a thigh holster with spare ammunition, and his old Steiner dog tags, which he almost never takes off.
Personality Overview/Traits: When on the battlefield, Ryan is the epitome of cool, calm, and collected. He is a solid pilot, not prone to panicking in tight situations, and is able to think tactically and well under pressure. When off-duty, you can find him with his friends from his old company, Eddie's Irregulars, a bunch of misfit screw-offs drinking, smoking, playing cards and generally being loud and rowdy. Barring that, you can find him in the gym or with hands, arms, (and sometimes whole body) submerged inside his mech, fixing this or tweaking that. Ryan is a generally nice guy who will talk your ear off once you get to know him and is a whiz with small arms weaponry, which he teaches to anyone who is willing to learn or improve. He is fiercly loyal to his friends and is a good ally to have on your side, or he could be a complete nightmare. He is prone to good-natured sarcasm and jokes, but when on duty he holds himself with an air of professionalism that you wouldn't expect from a man like him.
Biographical Information: Ryan Panzer was born on the planet Fianna in the year 3037 to one James and Fiona Panzer. As a boy he was exposed early on to the life of a Mechwarrior as both of his parents fought for House Steiner. His father was an academy instructor for the young mechwarrior pilots on Fianna and Ryan was afforded the privelage to be enrolled into the school at the early age of 10. At 17, he graduated top of his class and was Immediately assigned off-planet to a more promising and active post. Saying good-bye to his proud parents for the final time he left with dreams of glory and adventure but he was sorely dissappointed.
After six years of minor skirmishes and boring border postings at the age of 23, Sergeant Ryan Panzer took part in Operation Bulldog in the year 3059. While the operation was largely successful as a whole he saw hard fighting on planet Kiamba during the first wave attack when he and his Lance were mistakenly dropped deep into enemy territory, far from friendly forces. They knew thier mission and against all odds decided to raid their way to where they were supposed to actually be during the assault and saw some early success. But that was not to last as Clan reserve forces quickly rallied and ambushed them with two full assault lances. They were slaughtered to the man except for Ryan who managed to escape, and continued harassing his pursuers all the way to the front line. During the course of three days, Ryan tallied up a kill score of four mechs including a clan Nova cat using hit-and-run tactics like keeping his mec powered down until they came past him then springing out of ambush, unleashing a devastating salvo and disappearing again at top speed. On the fourth day his run of luck changed when they finally cornered him and engaged him on a running battle. Once again, Ryan took an excellent account of himself as he crippled two more mechs and destryoed another one but they eventually got the better of him and destroyed his mec completely. Ryan managed to eject but he didn't leave the battle unscathed taking serious shrapnel wounds to his neck and right arm as well as his left leg. As luck would have it, the battle attracted the wrong sort of attention for the Clan Smoke Jaguar pilots and the rest of them were either destroyed or captured by Steiner forces.
Ryan was rescued and treated for his injuries but he remained out of action for the rest of the operation, being sent back to a safer planet to rest and recover. Upon Operation Bulldog's competion in the year 3060 Ryan Panzer (Who never fully recovered) was honorably discharged and sent out into the world, Jobless and not having any real skills. Ryan drifted around for a year or so doing freelance work until he just happened to win a run-down Centurion D9 in a game of cards (which he cheated to win) And used his remaining credits as well as the ones he accumulated to fix it up into a right proper fighting mech. In the year 3062 he joined up with a group of like-minded individuals with similar stories and desires and formed a small mercenary company called the Eddie's Irregulars. For four years they traveled around the solar system performing any kind of mission wether it be escort, guard duty or search and destroy for the right price, and life was good. In the year 3036 during the fedcom war, the Irregulars did a job for the governor of Summer who refused to pay them the agreed upon price. Outraged and properly crazy, Ryan and the irregulars raided a hangar and 'liberated' a number of mechs as payment for services rendered. This didn't sit well with the governor as he ordered their immediate execution for banditry and sent the planets entire Lyran army after them (no, literally the ENTIRE army) when their hired dropship crew left orbit without them, they prepared to die and dug in for a fight. When the hammer was just about to come down on their heads however, they got a hialing signal from a man by the name of Gun bear offering to evacuate them and their stolen loot if they would merge companies. They unaimously agreed and were soon whisked away in the knick of time. Ryan has been serving in Gun Bear special squadrons for a year now and has adapted nicely to the system and the way things are, working hard and playing harder with his other irregulars and anyone else who will socialise with him.

Sorry I've been away for so long folks, finals time for an old fart like me is not fun, hence the one-liner posts in other areas. First things first, the countdown has officially commenced. First IC post will be up on Friday. In the meantime I'll finalize the formulas, and post them ASAP along with a list of "Company" mechs that are available. AnonymousJerk (Henceforth you are AJ), your character is but I still need an overview of the mech (look at the other mech spec charts to see what I'm talking about) before I can approve that as well. Any other thoughts, concerns?

Ryan Panzer actually won her in a game of cards he cheated at to obtain this mech which wasn't much more than a broken down heap, but he saw potential and wanted her. After he won her, he immediately set about rebuilding the mech basically from the ground up. All the essential things were pretty much scavenged except for the LBX AC 10 which needed only minor repairs to make functional once again, it's standard Corean model K7 chassis, and it's armor. Everything else he had to purchase and install himself with the help of the merchant's technical crew whom he won her from, as he was in a very big hurry to get Ryan's mech in decent condition and him out of his house (because Ryan wouldn't stop cheating at cards, but never got caught) Ryan and his borrowed crew proceeded to re-fit and re-arm his centurion model D9 with an LRM 10 with an added Artemis system in the right torso, she already came with an LBX AC 10 in her right arm, and he added two medium pulse lasers to the center torso and tweaked the armor a little, adding a CASE system and also an ECM in the left torso, pretty much customizing his mech to his own specialty of fighting. He lastly located an engine, but it was only a 250XL which was a little slower than he liked but still gave him enough speed to charge in, cause mass havoc, run away laughing, and do it again but could still hold it's own in a stand-up fight or at range. He also carries two tons of LRM ammunition as well as one ton of slug AC10 ammo and one ton of scattershot ammo. After four months of working pretty much non-stop she was re-christened 'Lady Luck' (more for the sake of irony than anything else) and has served Ryan well these past years. Alright, AJ's approved f'real.
More importantly, the first IC post and new thread should be up tomorrow.... barring any incidents like somebody losing control of their stupid pickup truck on an icy patch and rolling across my front yard of course.
