You are all sailors aboard the Bat, a Royal Navy ship-of-the-line during the golden age of piracy. During an extended cruise, you learn that the ship has been infiltrated by Captain Nobeard and his nefarious band of pirates. You must find out which members of your crew are upstanding patriots and which are nasty, thieving brigands. It is currently day, and the night begins in 48 hours. Vote as to who to lynch first. Good luck!
Having looked at the votes, the following things are banned (democracy man): -Any screenshots of role messages, public or private (I can't police this, please be honest) -Voting for yourself -Talking to dead people -Forwarding role messages The Crew:

Oh, I was so tempted. (So tempted that I temporarily did switched my display name, but then changed it back.) Having a beard like a knife (or knife like a beard, depending upon your interpretation) would be proof of me not being Nobeard. Given that no Nobeard has a beard, thus someone who is bearded is not Nobeard, and someone who is not bearded is not automatically not Nobeard. Not that Nobeard is necessarily the only non-bearded person. Non-bearded people may also be not Nobeard, but that would imply nothing. Unlike my beardedness being indicative of non-Nobeardedness. Also, I am actually bearded. (Note: I don't have, or need, a 'beard'.) As such, I've decided to activate the Avatar in my profile, that I'd been playing around with when I first joined whilst trying to get a decent likeness of myself. (I couldn't get the hat colour right, though. It's more beige.)

Well, someone has to go first, so I'll vote Breadknife on basis of the assumption that that was a Freudian slip by the OP. *nod*
I obviously have zero proof of this being the case, but hey, such is life mafia.

I vote NVO because she's beneath me on the playing list and because she's sneaky and murdery and evil, also beardless.

I'll also vote Breadknife, because that beard is bound to become self-aware at some point and then it could take us ALL out.

I'm going to vote TSM too, mostly because I find the sudden bandwagoning on Breadknife to be suspicious.

Considering wytyg's track record in the last game, I'm willing to gamble and follow her lead. Vote Breadknife…

Vote Breadknife… I will merely note that statistically, I have the best track record of anyone as everyone I voted to lynch across all my games has turned out mafia in the end (though TSM took longer than most).

Yeah, but you are probably the most cunning person that I've played with too, so I really don't know! My record is significantly less impressive when you realise there was only one game in which I was not either mafia or the detective and in that game I was lynched first after refusing to vote at all. ETA: I don't see this "cunning" given that I've yet to win a game and was directly responsible for my death three separate times.

Tradition? I've haven't been first lynch since October! In fact, first vote going after Breadknife I believe is the new tradition.

At this moment, I'm also stuck with no useful option other than NoLynch (i.e. no vote, if you prefer), but that may change...
Like I've said before, I hate Day 1s. You can argue that Night 1s are just as bad, but I say that the Mafia is almost as blind as to the specifics, and depending on what town roles actually exist the good guys generally can't/shouldn't make things worse overnight. And then (most of the time) the more useful ones of us can at least start to get a handle on things, ready to subtly argue things properly once Day 2 arrives.

So I was doing some absent-minded Googling at work, and I found a published academic paper about optimal Mafia strategies... apparently that's a thing? According to it, the optimal strategy for townies is: in every turn, each player from a set of Nt - Mt players (Nt is total number of players, Mt is total number of mafia at a given time t) picks some number ki from 0 to Nt -1, and then everyone votes to lynch the player who is 1 + Σi ki (mod Nt)th on the list of players. The mafia's best response to this strategy is to vote for that player too, so basically the game reduces to N0/2 turns of random voting (woo hoo!). But it makes sense, since it basically renders the strategic role of the mafia obsolete. It gets way more complex when you include detectives and other special players, since each new role adds another dimension to the analysis. But it's an interesting read if you're into that stuff.
Anyway, in the interest of fun, I'm going to totally ignore everything they suggested and go no vote for now.

So what I'm getting is from game theory perspective, the best idea is basically to pick someone random?

But isn't he saying that whomever we choose we should vote as a pack, so mafia have to vote with us irrespective of who they want to kill?

Yes, he is. So in the interests of voting as a group, we should flip a coin and heads vote TSM tails vote Breadknife.
I have no knowledge of how to flip an electronic coin and confirm the results, therefore I demand we agree it is heads and comply with the nice man's silly plan.

But isn't he saying that whomever we choose we should vote as a pack, so mafia have to vote with us irrespective of who they want to kill? Yep! The mafia's advantage is that they know each other and can coordinate privately. The town's advantage is our numbers - but we can't confirm who's a townie and who isn't - so the randomisation strategy leverages our large numbers without requiring that we have private information about each other's roles. And it's better than the "bandwagon" strategy because it's simultaneous, not sequential, so it can't be hijacked from the beginning. It's pretty clever, but doesn't make for a very interesting game.

After much consideration, I'm going to have to go back to my original plan of following wytyg's lead... Her success in identifying mafia members in the last game without the advantage of being a detective has convinced me that that's a solid strategy. Okay, sure, on the First day it's purely a guessing game, but I figure her guess is as good as anybody's. Vote Breadknife…
