Rumors of war spread widely as the world inches towards the brink of calamity. Of the all the nations, six distinct factions have emerged, each of which has everything to gain by exploiting this unique moment of crisis.
Let's all play Risk! The game of Global Domination!
From Wikipedia:
Risk is a strategy board game produced by Parker Brothers (now a division of Hasbro). It was invented by French film director Albert Lamorisse and originally released in 1957 as La Conquête du Monde ("The Conquest of the World") in France. It was later bought by Parker Brothers and released in 1959 with some modifications to the rules as Risk: The Continental Game, then as Risk: The Game of Global Domination.
Risk is a turn-based game for two to six players. The standard version is played on a board depicting a political map of the Earth, divided into forty-two territories, which are grouped into six continents. The object of the game is to occupy every territory on the board and in doing so, eliminate the other players. Players control armies with which they attempt to capture territories from other players, with results determined by dice rolls.

Seriously though, you all know what Risk is, now let's play together, on the internet! There exists a wonderful site, landgrab.net which lets you play risk with anyone from around the world. You can customize rulesets, play in realtime or by post, and best of all, it's free! You can even create original, custom maps with completely different rulesets, so you can get super creative while still enjoying the same basic gametype.
In case you don't know the rules, wikipedia has a good summary. I'd quote, but then I'd be quoting the entire thing:

The only thing you have to do is create an account, tell me the name, and I can invite you to any game I want.
For our first game, we're just going to be playing on the standard earth map:
We'll be playing with a Standard Rule Set, with a few modifications. The rules are as follows:
6 players
20 armies each to start
3 circle cards are worth 5 armies
3 square cards are worth 5 armies
3 diamond cards are worth 5 armies
If you currently possess the territory depicted on your card, you can place two armies on that territory
Cards can be turned in at any time, no matter whose turn it is.
You can fortify (move armies from one territory to another) once at the end of your turn, and you can only fortify if the two territories connect in a straight line.
Positions of starting armies are randomized. Normally I'd make it so we could choose where our armies can go one at a time, but unfortunately it's not really feasible to do given we have different time zones.
Turn timers! Since this is an online game and we all have busy lives, I'm setting up a 24 hour turn timer. What this means is that when it's your turn to play, you have a full 24 hours to make your move or your turn will be skipped. Once you make your move and take your turn the timer resets, and the next person has 24 hours to make their move and take their turn before the timer skips their turn.
It's a basic setup and it's less complicated than it seems. What's best is that the website will keep track of all of this for us, including dice rolling, which makes things easier.
Still, let's make this a bit more creative! What I want y'all to do is sign up for the website, and make a nation! It can be your NS nation, it can be literally anything you want. Just make sure they have a reason to want to go to war with everyone and conquer the world.
Warning, there are only 5 open slots for the first game! However! We can run more than one game at once, on different maps! Take a look at landgrab's Map Broswer and see if you like one! Post it here, find some other folks who are interested and we can play a game on it! Some good ones that I can recommend are Endless Lands, Kingdoms of Khaos, or Modern Asia.
Here's what you need for the application:
-Landgrab username
-Name of Nation(s) your armies represent (ex. ‘Limnadia', ‘Gallstonia’, ‘Jersey’)
-Form of Government your armies represent (ex. ‘Democratic Republic’, ‘Sovereign Nation’, ‘Petty Island Dictatorship’)
-Name of Your Nation’s Leading Newspaper (ex. ‘Majestic Times’, The TeaTime Journal’, ‘The Hey-I-Like-Orgasms-Too! Gazette’)
-Your Preferred Title (ex. ‘Supreme General’, ‘Dictator for Life’, ‘Beneficiary of Nepotism’)
-Preferred color (if any, you can pick when joining the game too)
-A paragraph (or more) detailing your command experience, your reluctant/providential/backstabbingly-despotic rise to power, and what life experiences you feel most qualify you for the position of ‘Unopposed Master of the Known World’.
-A second paragraph (or more) About the nation you represent. Are your people hearty or nimble? Perhaps they're known for their especially well-ventilated yurts, or alpaca rodeos? What circumstances, if any, may have primed your friendly folk to thinking bloodthirsty thoughts about their neighbors over the border, or is this likely more your idea than theirs?
Landgrab username: The Iron Rose
Name of Nation(s) your armies represent: Maudania
Form of Government your armies represent: The Great Nation of Maudania
Name of Your Nation’s Leading Newspaper: The Daily Informant
Your Preferred Title: General
Preferred Colour: Blue
Commander: General G.D. Googington
G. D. Googington started off as a mere cog in the political wheels of the country now known as Maudania; he served as an assistant to one of the members of the country's Senate, which in the time before his rise to power ruled the poor citizenry with a tyrannical iron fist. The Senate was completely ineffectual in bringing prosperity to its people, instead bringing misery and shame to the country both internally and abroad. At the urging of a dear friend, Googington ran for his superior's office after he strangely and tragically vanished; he was elected in an absolute landslide, as the people recognized his gifted leadership and obvious intellectual superiority.
Now serving on the Senate, Googington provided the lone voice of reason in a sea of chaos, crying out that the Board must do more to help the disenfranchised people and less to line their own pockets. Tragically, his efforts were blocked by the uncooperative and unimaginative Senate, and tyranny continued to rule the day. As fate would have it, each member of the Senate vanished in a manner much like that which fell Googington's former superior; luckily, Googington himself was saved from these cruel twists. Standing now as the lone member of the Senate, Googington was convinced--again by his most trusted friend--that in order to fix the problems that faced his country, an entire new government had to be formed. He installed himself as leader, forming the new Senate as the current nonbinding body that it is today, and the rest--as they say--is history.
The people of Maudania are a quiet, industrious folk, the likes of which were very easily manipulated by the past tyrannical regimes. Luckily, now that they have free choice in whom they elect to the Senate, they have realized that Mr. Googington is clearly the most capable leader they have ever had, and therefore it does not matter that there exists no provision for him to be removed from his office. It is plain to see that great times lay ahead for Maudania, as their great leader marches them forward into unimaginable glory.
~Alexanda DuMal- High Communicator of Maudania
Nevermind this, just post with your landgrab username and your preferred colour! The colour is just so no one else here takes it, you can pick your colour when the game starts.
I'm hoping we can start the game around a week from now, but I'm open to moving the game forwards or backwards a few days as needed.
Either way apply, lemme know if there's any rule changes you want, but above all, have fun!
