At the turn of the 20th century prior to World War I the seven Great European Powers engage in an intricate struggle for supremacy. Military forces invade and withdraw shifting borders and altering empires with subtle maneuvers and daring gambits. Alliances are formed and trust is betrayed as players negotiate and outwit one another in a delicate balance of cooperation and competition to gain dominance of the continent. Diplomacy challenges players to rely on their own cunning and cleverness not dice to determine the outcome of this game of conspiracies and conquest. Let's play Diplomacy, the game of International Intrigue. From Wikipedia: It came to my mind to do this the moment TSM posted her thread about Risk... I'm personally a bigger fan of Diplomacy than of Risk because of the fact that Diplomacy eliminates the randomness of dice rolls in determining outcomes. It is purely about planning, social interaction, and interpersonal skills. Again from wikipedia, a brief summary of the differences between Diplomacy and the majority of war games: The Diplomacy Wikipedia page for more info. Now there's a number of sites online where you can play Diplomacy, I figure we can use this one, assuming that there is enough interest. I deally each game should have 7 players. Oh, and here's what the Diplomacy standard map looks like:

My brother and I played an interactive version of this game once, we had no idea what we were doing. My brother was the Chancellor of Germany and just randomly placed pieces around the map and was actually winning the game... he pronounced "Zounderkiet!" in the midst of a faux rant in German. To this day, we look at each other and say "Zounderkiet" when we have no idea what we are doing but are going to do it anyway.
Um, yes I'd like to try a game of this sometime but my level is lower than novice.

I'm in, assuming everyone's still game

Do we pick our starting locations or are they distributed randomly?

Do we pick our starting locations or are they distributed randomly? I've only played on other game on that site, but I believe you select your top 3 preferred nations. What territories you start with is determined by what nation you control. All of the nations (except Russia) start with 3 supply centers (and thus 3 units). Russia starts with 4. Of the nations that start with 3, all but England have two armies and one fleet. England has two fleets and one army. Russia starts with two of each.

Do we want to ask how you got that name? It used to be my name for everything ever since I joined Club Penguin at age 9 or so. Like Blaat, I just liked sheep. It stopped a few years back when it dawned on me that it sounded rather odd.
