I say, yes. I am interested. I've seen many fun games like this go dead for lack of npc interactions Agreed. By the same token however there shouldn't be a bajillion drop-ins either IE suddenly general whatshisface becomes the CO. Plus if we're honest... most NPC's probably will be expendable. I'm willing to do it if I have a little more explanation. Well you know what an NPC is... I'm guessing you'd like explanations regarding what the other roles I mentioned were?

Exactly. NPC's are as a rule expendable. And in some cases so are pc's. And we do need a few rules for it so it doesn't become mass havoc

Two things: How do I handle NPCs if they're not playable? And yes, the other roles would be good. I'm particularly interested in the aerospace fighters.

Exactly. NPC's are as a rule expendable. And in some cases so are pc's. And we do need a few rules for it so it doesn't become mass havoc Well it is the Jihad, so everything's expendable in some form or another And I'm working on an NPC application as well as basic ground rules, but for now I'm thinking name age mini-bio, plus rules saying "no grand admirals out of thin air" or "no illegetimate sons of Kai Allard-Liao and Natasha Kerensky" and the like. Agreed. By the same token however there shouldn't be a bajillion drop-ins either IE suddenly general whatshisface becomes the CO. Plus if we're honest... most NPC's probably will be expendable. Well you know what an NPC is... I'm guessing you'd like explanations regarding what the other roles I mentioned were? Two things: How do I handle NPCs if they're not playable? And yes, the other roles would be good. I'm particularly interested in the aerospace fighters. Well... think of NPC's as "Non-Primary Characters" instead of non-playing characters. Sanada is the "face" of your participation while other NPC's you might create are "flavor" more or less, characters to round out the procedings. In that vein then they could not only be GSS members, they could also be advisors from their current employer, civilians in a nearby town etc. etc. Well let's start with aerospace fighters then. Essentially, ASF's are what they're slated to be IE fighter craft capable of operating in planetary atmospheres as well as the dead of space. They can be pretty heavily armed in their own right but their biggest advantage is of course overall speed. Their big limit is fuel (they have to use it even with a fusion engine, ballancing and whatnot). As always, the wiki provides: www.sarna.net/wiki/AeroSpace_FighterWay at the other end of the scale are combat vehicles. These are essentially the workhorse units for virtually every standing armed force in Battletech. They're a lot cheaper than Battlemechs (mostly) hence why most commanders are more liable to send them in first before the mechs. That being said they still can't carry the same amount of weaponry and armor combined with mobility that a battlemech of equal tonnage can muster making them not ideal for all combat scenarios: The wiki of course puts things into more succint detail than I can: www.sarna.net/wiki/Combat_Vehicle#BattleMechs_vs_Combat_VehiclesBattle Armor is your archetypal powered armor suit envisioned since the Heinlein days of *Starship Troopers*. A relatively recent development (First the Clans then the IS respectively), Battle Armor essentially amplifies what a standard (albeit rather burly) infantryman can do IE go for longer and faster take more hits and dish out more punishment than somebody with a rifle. Effectively BA are shock troopers that can attack anything short of airborne units in the right circumstances, although they're not nearly as durable as CV's or Mechs. Yadda yadda yadda wiki: www.sarna.net/wiki/Battle_ArmorTechnicians might be the most valuable specialists in any military profession in Battletech. You can kill a mechwarrior or pilot or infantrymen and they can be replaced, but a good technician? The guy that fixes something on one of your combat machines or the guy in charge of all of it? Those guys are pretty much worth their weight in C-Bills and gold... Yeah you get it, technicians are the crew chiefs and support personnel for any military unit. Clear as mud?

Alright so while I work on the whole NPC application thing, how about this; if you're going to take over NPC duties for something that has a small crew (like a tank or fireteam of infantry of battle armor squad) then you have responsibility for the whole crew/squad/whatever. Not to saddle people with more work but it probably doesn't make sense to simply come up with a tank driver then wait for somebody else to fill in the gunner or commander slots.

While we wait for everyone to post in the IC thread *ahem*, tis' the season and all... no not that holiday, the other one, you know...
Battletechmas!
So what's on everyone's wish list this year? A new XL engine, maybe a vintage SLDF ribbon, or a year's pass to the finest Canopian, um, "entertainment" establishment?

Waiting on the lance leader. Hmm, good point... where is he anyway. Hey don't look at me, it's your brother that's gone AWOL... ... waitasec just what the hell were you poking me with? Because if it's a semi-portable autocannon or a man-pack PPC they're definetely on my Christmas list this year. ... what? They're practical gifts! I have a tree out back that the bushy-tailed and winged tree-rats like to inhabit, and they make a terrible racket. But I don't have the space for a small pulse-laser turret in my backyard so I have to make do.

I think my brother has been playing Ryse of Rome or Inquisition on his brand new XBone (jealous!) instead of checking here and posting. Everyone in my family caught a nasty stomach virus from somebody's rug rat over thanksgiving too so that explains last weekend.

Oh god, familial viruses on thanksgiving, the trauma the trauma... yeah that happened to me as well several years ago. I think last summer the last of us forgave the brat that gave it to us Oh... screw that, you're on the hook for a new high-speed combat unit of some kind... preferably a light omnimech but I'll settle for a combat vehicle.

Alright guys, so it seems as though we're having a problem of not writing due to a post being "good enough" in some way shape or form... ... can we knock this stuff off right now? Please? Not everything has to be a magnum opus or world-shaking. Sometimes things just need to move along, it's how games and stories and life work in the ebb and flow of things. I'd really have to hate to put people on a timer for posts in some way but we've been stalled for quite awhile now... Obligatory taggage: anonymousjerk SaintB @samuraikoku OviraptorEdit: Obviously if there are real-world issues precluding you from participating this doesn't apply, just a heads up at some point when things settle down would be appreciated.

First things first, thank you SaintB and @samuraikoku for getting things re-started. I honestly felt like sort of a shit-heel for the previous post but it had to be said in lieu of handing out "move your ass or else" notices. That being said, a bit of housekeeping here, and it's at you Samu. The only weapons that "lock" per se are missile or artillery weapons IE weapons that can attack indirectly. Nothing on the Akuma locks... but what you can do is put the pipper/crosshairs over a target bracket, in a sense that's a "lock".

Pretty much Honestly I think the only giant stompy robot game that features locking guns is the Armored Core series... I think. Maybe Steel Battalion.

And do they pay in C-Bills or H-Bills plus bounties for confirmed kills? As to the inspiration bit, again if you're lost for something tangible just narrate the process for lack of anything else going on. For now, all we need is Oviraptor to chime in and we're golden.

I have no problem changing it if you can tell me the best way to do it. I decided to ask because I did a poor job of describing the location of the two vehicles (I mulled over it all week). The truck is behind the fallen dropship on the northwest corner where a work crew is stripping off components. The Scout Car is on the south side amongst the mud and about to be very dead

(I hope you don't mind the questions - I have no problem changing anything so long as I know what works best).

The shot would be made but your chances of hitting would be pretty low... like in the 20% range.

Unfortunately, if I changed my RP, everyone would have to change theirs too, so that may no longer be an option...
