Yay townies! Good game, Ovi! I liked the pirate setting. Yeah, like whereyouthinkyoupoliying said, the setting was good. Made me hum songs from the Pirates of Penzance every so often Thanks! Patrick O'Brian is to blame. I looked around, hoping for some kind of sign from the heavens and there was a Jack Aubrey book sitting on the shelf.

What is going on in this thread.. Endgame wind-down (while we're waiting for more intelligent things to be brought up, such as what actual roles there were). Quick, sign up for July Mafia, then you can spout a bit of nonsense, yourself, before the month is out!

Oh yes, roles: Master-at-Arms (able to kill one player every night): Serrland Every night?! That's quite the role. Or is that normal for a vigilante role (that's what this is, right)? What happened in the first night (only 1 kill)? Did both you and the mafia target Edlichbury? Also, for future reference: what#s a vigilante's endgame? Do they have one? Or are they just wreaking havoc?

Let's go for.. both? I suppose? Well, you've seen the roles we had this game. So let's start with that. {The explanation is long, so I'm putting it in a Spoiler...}Everyone who is down to play the game gets a role. Generally roles given are good guys ("townies", or themed, e.g. like Sailors) or bad guys ("mafia", or, in this instance Pirates), according to the whim of the person running the game.
Traditionally Townies win if only town-people are left, at some point, and Mafia win if only mafia-people are left. There may also be others either single (e.g. serial killers) or in pairs (e.g. lovers) or groups (cultists) who may have their own winning condition, and may well also ostensibly belong to one or other of the main factions but have their own motivations during the game.
Active roles get to do something, usually at night. The Mafia group as a whole have a communal action (to ambush and kill someone, or at least try), but individual mafia might also have some form of personal action. Mafia (generally) know who each other are right from the beginning of the game, so as to discuss their tactics and actions out of public view.
To counter the Mafia, individual townies (who do not generally know who each other are, at the beginning) have power-roles of their own, such as Detective (can examine individuals, to try to work out what faction(s) they might belong to), Doctors (keep watch to keep a person alive, hopefully thwarting the Mafia's targeting of them), Vigilantes (have a kill-action of their own, to try to use against Mafia) and the like.
If there is a "Cupid" character (usually a town-role), that person gets to choose two individuals to become "lovers". If one lover is killed, the other one also dies (protecting them, through grief or also by also being in the way of the attack, according to the theme). Cupid usually acts without knowing who everyone is so it's a random choice, which often stirs things up. (One planned death immediately becomes two deaths, which can cause problems.)
Play is generally split into phases of day and night. During the day, public conversation and general banter tries to establish who knows what, who knows more than they are saying, etc, to the end of lynching a single person of apparent threat. (Townies hope they'll kill a Mafia/non-Townie member. Mafia hope they'll contrive the town to kill one of their own.) And then, at night, everyone gets their action (or the option of using their action... they may have been told they'll get to use their skill only once, per game), finding out by next 'morning' whether that action has succeeded and (if it did/apparently did) what resulted of it.
There are 'flavour' changes (e.g. "town" => "sailors", "mafia" => "pirates") that just affects the names of roles, but there are often tweaks, such as strange and uncommon roles handed out to certain players that are usually not known by others. Funny protective roles, peculiar detection roles, the ability to convert people from one side to another, bring them back to life or to make more kills happen than are expected (for better or worse).
Sometimes players don't even really know what their roles are (and may or may not work them out, during play). For example someone who thinks they are a doctor, but in actual fact is a "quack doctor", and perhaps whoever they protect on night 1 dies of blood-poisoning on night 2 (or some other effect, suitable for the theme). See also the Paranoid Cop. They think they're a cop(/detective) but they always get a "they are mafia"-type result, regardless, while a Naive Cop might always get "they are town" and an Insane Cop might get the exact reverse result from what is actual. And then there's roles that look suspicious, if investigated, but aren't (commonly known as Millers... probably because millers generally don't live in the town (but outside of it) but are still ethically aligned with the town). Of course an Insane Cop examining a Miller would get "Townie!" as a result of their investigation, generally, which would be good until and unless the Insane Cop realises that he's Insane, and therefore decides that the Miller is not innocent after all. And a Random Cop is pretty much as you'd expect (no correlation at all). But over-use of such roles is generally done to amuse the person running the game, rather than make the game 'work' for the players. (But it can also be done to 'balance' the two sides. e.g. a very powerful complement of Townie power-roles is inhibited by some of the more foolish ones, rather than merely adding to the capabilities of the Mafia side, as well...)
TL;DR; - people get assigned roles and often also responsibilities and then go through cycles of trying to keep people of like alignment alive while killing off everyone else. Truth and lies and diversionary tactics alike are bantered between those people who still live until finally there's a clear winner (or everyone has died). Then everyone finds out what's been happening, if they haven't already been told, or worked it out.

Or are they just wreaking havoc? Serrland only chose to use his power once, coincidentally on the night he was killed by his target. His endgame in this case was a townie victory, because I decided to make him townie-aligned. You can also have mafia vigilantes and even neutral vigilantes who try to kill everyone else.

Also, for future reference: what#s a vigilante's endgame? Do they have one? Or are they just wreaking havoc? Re-read it. Two people were killed, but one was resurrected. The person who was resurrected (me) had been Lynched on Day 1. (Remember! Everyone remember that!) A vigilante doesn't need to kill, so I suspect that on Night 1 (with absolutely no information to go on), there was no kill. (Like I need not have targeted She-ep, myself, if She-ep hadn't made themselves suspicious by piling on in 1 after switching away from voting for NVO. (Purely by chance, that original choice would have been a correct one, in context, although wouldn't have actually changed anything given the advancement of the bandwagon.) 1 If She-ep hadn't done that, I think I would probably have targeted Jello (Ovi has the details, also, even if I don't care to go through my old correspondence on the matter). Whom, while equally innocent would (incidentally) have killed off NVO in the process, to a slight proportional town advantage. edit: Darn - ninjaed by the Mod. Note that "neutral" Vigilantes are often called "Serial Killers", i.e. out for themselves. Equally dangerous to town and Mafia, and I've known the night-time Mafia conversations being pretty much "how do we get rid of the Serial Killer?", because he's ruining the well-laid plans.

If it wasn't for me then the townies would've lost. So I think I deserve honorary sailor or something.
